This box is full of hats; this was my Merry Widow hat; it was always so pretty I hated to destroy it, but I suppose it really isn't much good! I wonder if some poor woman could use it. And these are all old collars of Pa's and Len's it seems a shame to throw them away. I wonder if we could find some one who wears this size?
"Yes, th' job's been done recent," admitted Pocus Pete, "but that doesn't prove anythin'. Now if we could find a saw with Len's name on it, that might be some law-evidence. But I don't see any; do you?" There was no saw in sight. The cattle had retreated to the far side of the corral, leaving the part next the broken fence free for examination. But as Pete had said, there was no saw lying about.
At the word, Cooper and Thompson snatched up their bridles and darted off, followed by Price and Willoughby. Dixon and Bum were not in the crowd, but no one had leisure just then to notice their absence. "Len's yer horse, like a good feller," said Mosey hastily. "What next I wonder?" Mosey snatched up his bridle, and went off at a run. "Hello, Collins! I didn't notice you in the hurry.
Len was, up again and at him like a shot, and I reckon it was jolly plucky of a chap of Len's age, and I dare say he'd have had an awful hiding if Sam hadn't arrived on the scene. Sam is a big, silent chap, and he can fight anybody in this district.
Before the bully suspected it Dave had suddenly slipped his hand in under Len's coat, and had pulled out a short saw. For a moment Len was too surprised to utter a word. Then he cried: "Here! Give me that!" "No, I don't think I will," Dave said, coolly. "I may need it as evidence. I thought you said you didn't saw any posts." "I I didn't!" "Then Whitey Wasson, or some of your crowd, did.
"Are you going anywhere?" she asked, her eyes very wide as they gazed at him. "Nowhere in particular." "Then do come with me, will you? I have to buy a present for Len's birthday, and I should be so glad of your help in choosing it." Dyce jumped into the vehicle, and, as his habit was, at once surveyed himself in the little looking-glass conveniently placed for that purpose.
Pete chuckled, "and I'm goin' to ride that." This he did to his own great satisfaction. Several times when he and his boys got into more than verbal arguments with the Centre O crowd Pete used Len's horse. "It's like gettin' th' enemy's ammunition an' firin' it at him," said Pete with a laugh." I guess they don't relish it none." And Molick and his crowd did not.
A tall man, with a most sinister countenance, but rather better dressed than the average backwoodsman, soon made his way to our boats. I plainly stated my object in calling upon him, and expressed a wish that he would not be severe in his charges, as in that case I should return to Captain Len's landing, put to sea, and follow the coast instead of the interior waters to the inlet of St.
"Not that I approve of Len's actions, either," she added. "But a man can take care of himself, of course! Len's always late for meals," she went on. "Seems like he can't get it through his head that it makes a difference if you sit down when things are ready or when they're all dried up. But Pa's late anyway to-night, so it doesn't matter much!"
Pa gives you a good home, but he can't do much more, and after he and I go, why, it will be quite natural for you girls to go on keeping house for Len I suppose." Martie's sensitive soul writhed under these mournful predictions. Dependence was bitter to her, Len's kindly patronage stung her only a little less than his occasional moods of cheerful masculine contempt.
