"Why, where's our Martha?" cried Bob Cratchit, looking round. "Not coming," said Mrs. Cratchit. "Not coming!" said Bob, with a sudden declension in his high spirits; for he had been Tim's blood horse all the way from church, and had come home rampant. "Not coming upon Christmas Day!"
"Tim's clock," she realised, "but I've got it." There was no expression on her face whatever. Another child might have taken the trouble felt interested, at any rate to try and see what time it was. But Maria, aware that the dim light would make this a difficult and tedious operation, did nothing of the sort. It could make no difference anyhow to any one, anywhere!
Tim Riley's been laid up for six months and he's just back on half-time and can't ever do any better, I guess and he's been ordered out of his house which means up the river " "Up where Granny Castle lives?" broke in Robin, in a queer voice. "Yes. And it's hard on Tim's wife and her children they're just little things. And he can't go anywhere else, now.
The situation became tense. If the searchers took the false trail and went on, all right. If they started to search good night! They lay behind the brush and waited. It seemed, after a while, that they had been there an hour. Don had just begun to believe that the pursuit had gone off in a new direction, when Tim's hand grasped his shoulder with a convulsive pressure.
But the pirate captain, as the tall dark man in the stern of the proa seemed to be, only let fall the long crease which he had held in his right hand brandishing at us, the bullet from Tim's rifle having broken his arm, that also dropped powerless by his side. "You nearly had him there," cried Mr Mackay, now taking a shot. "I hope I'll have better luck though."
This device would have succeeded admirably had not one of his legs slowly dropped so low down as to attract the notice of the bear when it awoke. Rising to its full height on its hind legs, and protruding its tongue to the utmost, it just managed to touch Tim's toe. The touch acted liked an electric spark, awoke him at once, and the leg was drawn promptly up.
"I'm going to vote for somebody else," he said uneasily. Tim's good humor vanished. "You are?" Don nodded. "You're too hot-tempered," he said. "You always get things stewed up. You " "I don't see any wings on you or Alex," Tim cried wrathfully. "What kind of a game is this?" Don said nothing. What was the use, he thought. He walked on; and after a moment Tim stood still and let him go his way.
Then all about Barbara and Toby had to be explained, and a great weight fell from Tim's heart when he quite understood that the old woman was a real home friend that there would no longer be any puzzle or difficulty as to how to do or which way to go, now that they had fallen in with this trusty protector.
Still, on the whole, they were not unkindly treated they had enough to eat of common food, and Diana, who took them a good deal under her charge, was kind to them in her rough sulky way. But it was a dreadful change for the poor little things, and they would already have tried, at all risks, to run away, had it not been for Tim's begging them to be patient and trust to him.
Door after door was burst open with cries of disappointed rage; at last they ascended the turret-stairs, they found a small door barred and locked. Tim's father, a huge axe in his brawny arm, shivered the panels; the crowd rushed in, and there, seated amongst a strange and motley litter, they found the devoted Madge.
