Among the other well-known men to whom I was introduced at Liverpool was John Cragg, an intelligent and enterprising ironfounder. He was an extensive manufacturer of the large sugar-boiling pans used in the West Indies. He had also given his attention to the introduction of iron into buildings of different sorts.
"Wish I may die!" roared Cragg, smiting his fist down on the table again, "a guinea a golden guinea to the man as could stand on 'is pins an' fight me for five minutes an' as for Buck Vibart curse 'im, I say as 'e won on a foul!" "A guinea," said I to myself, "is a fortune!" And, setting down my empty tankard, I crossed the room and touched Cragg upon the shoulder.
We shall summon the steward and housekeeper of Castle Cragg. And now, my dear, I must leave you, if the warrants are to be issued to-day," said the judge, rising. "So soon, papa?" "It is necessary, my dear." "But, at any rate, you will be back very shortly?" "I do not know, my child." "The countess expects you to make Cameron Court your home while you remain in the neighborhood."
"Tom," cried the one-eyed man, "wot's all this we heerd of Ted Jarraway of Swansea bein' knocked out in five rounds by this 'ere Lord Vibbot, up in London?" "Vibbot?" repeated Cragg, frowning into his tankard, "I 'aven't 'eard of no Vibbot, neither lord, earl, nor dook." "Come, Tom," coaxed the other, "everybody's heerd o' Buck Vibbot, 'im they calls the 'Fightin' Barronite."
But he was told that the old Earl of Hurstmonceux had arrived at noon on the previous day and had claimed the body of his son and had it removed from the prison in a close hearse at the dead of night, to escape the observation of the mob, and conveyed to Castle Cragg, where, without any funeral pomp, it would be quietly deposited in the family vault.
Not that they were more luxurious or more splendid than those she had left forever behind at Castle Cragg, but they were oh, so different! There all the magnificence was tainted with the presence of guilt; here all was pure with innocence. There she had been "under the curse"; here she was "under the benediction." There she had been tormented by a devil; here she was comforted by an angel.
Cragg had started up in his chair and now sat scowling at his inquisitor open-mouthed; and in the hush I could hear the ticking of the clock in the corner, and the crackle of the logs upon the hearth. Then, all at once, Cragg's pipe shivered to fragments on the floor and he leapt to his feet.
Martin's, where I met with the good news que elle ne est con child, the fear of which she did give me the other day, had troubled me much. My joy in this made me send for wine, and thither come her sister and Mrs. Cragg, and I staid a good while there.
"Quick wi' 'is 'ands 'e may be, an' able to give a goodish thump, but as for beatin' me it's 'all me eye an' Betty Martin, an' you can lay to that, my lads. I could put 'im to sleep any time an' anywhere, an' I'd like ah! I'd like to see the chap as says contrairy!" "I'd like," repeated Cragg, "ah! I'd like to see the cove as says contrairy."
Then suddenly recollecting her own cruel position, and feeling too proud as well as too honest to appear under false colors, she blushed, and said: "I cannot think how your ladyship could know that I was here; but I am sure that when you did me this honor of calling, you did not know the circumstances under which I left Castle Cragg."
