Auntie, the sober old girl with the mixed-pickle disposition, suddenly comin' to life and pinchin' Old Hickory's find while he's tryin' to make up his mind whether it's phony or not. Auntie, of all people! More hearty haw-haws. When I finally does drift into Old Hickory's private office and he motions me to shut the door, I'm still registerin' merry thoughts.
"If you're laughing at me, I'll invite you to drop down here and stand on the end of my nose." Old Mr. Crow grew sober at once. The mere thought of perching himself in so dangerous a place was enough to put a quick end to his noisy haw-haws. "My dear sir!" he cried. "I wouldn't dream of standing on the nose of a fine old gentleman like you. No indeedy! My manners are too good for that."
But I'll bet it wasn't many minutes after they got to their own quarters before the hearty haw-haws was turned loose in four different languages. Meanwhile Auntie and Mr. Ellins has been lookin' on without gettin' the plot of the piece. "I must say," Auntie comes out with, "that I see no very subtle strategy about that performance. Those men must have suspected.
Indeed, he tried to control himself, for some reason standing in awe of my appearance, and then he burst out into such loud haw-haws that the crew poked their heads above the cabin hatch. "Michie Reetchie," said Xavier, and again he burst into laughter that choked further speech. He controlled himself and laid his finger on his wen. "You don't believe it," said Nick, offended.
Wish to goodness, however, that I was there now instead of stewing in these wretched islands chasing slavers we can never catch and assailed by the Australian newspapers as 'lazy, la-de-da "haw-haws." Wish I had one of those newspaper fellows on board the Reynard to show him how the much-maligned naval officer doing patrol work in the South Seas manages to live and keep his men from rank mutiny.
Then I sat on a pine log in a state of unadorned nature, oblivious to all around, intent only on the massacre of the things that had violated me. How much time flew I could not guess. Great loud "Haw-haws!" roused me to consternation. There behind me stood Jones and Emett shaking as if with the ague. "It's not funny!" I shouted in a rage.
He looks just as big and homely and good-natured as ever. "Friends," says he, sweepin' off the alfalfa lid with a flourish, "out in Gopher we always like to open up with a little music; and while I ain't no Caruso, or anything like that, I'm goin' to do my best." A snicker runs through the crowd at that, turnin' to haw-haws as he proceeds to unlimber something from the green bag.
Those who could read traced the legend "Photographic Car" on the sides of the vehicle, and with many a rude joke each bantered the other to have his picter took for such purposes as skeerin' stock off the railroad-track or knockin' the crows stiff. Their scuffling and haw-haws waked the occupant of the car, who rose in his bunk and drew the curtain from a window. The boys saw his face and hushed.
If the flock was within hearing, it was astonishing to hear the loud chorus of haw-haws, and to see them come rushing over the same grove where a week before they had been fooled in the same way. Sometimes, indeed, they seemed to remember; and when the pseudo young crow began his racket at the bottom of some thick grove they would collect on a distant pine tree and haw-haw in vigorous answer.
