To chiv in English Gipsy means as much and more than to fix in America, in fact, it is applied to almost any kind of action. It may be remarked in this connection, that in German or continental Gipsy, which represents the English in a great measure as it once was, and which is far more perfect as to grammar, we find different words, which in English have become blended into one.
It is purely Gipsy, and seems to have more than one root. Chiv, chib, or chipe, in Rommany, mean a tongue, inferring scolding, and chiv anything sharp-pointed, as for instance a dagger, or goad or knife. But the old Gipsy word chiv-av among its numerous meanings has exactly that of casting, throwing, pitching, and driving.
You'll find us at the Half Moon and Seven Stars in this village, at any time, and open to any reasonable proposition. Hem! Chiv, my dear fellow, go out and see what sort of a night it is. Mr Slyme lost no time in disappearing, and it is to be presumed in going round the corner.
He threw the fragment in the man's face. 'Now scoot! he said, 'an' don't show yer ugly chiv on Jim Crow again, 'r you'll catch a fatal dose o' lead. The crippled thief limped away without a word, pressing a palm to his streaming ear. 'That seemed an infernally brutal thing to do, said Jim to his mate, when they were discussing the incident. 'Not a bit of it, answered Burton.
'Was there ever, cried Mr Tigg, joining the young men at the door, and shutting it carefully behind him, 'such an independent spirit as is possessed by that extraordinary creature? Was there ever such a Roman as our friend Chiv? Was there ever a man of such a purely classical turn of thought, and of such a toga-like simplicity of nature? Was there ever a man with such a flow of eloquence?
He shortly returned and said, 'I had to "chiv" that fellow, he was not dead, a cant word, meaning that he had to stab him. Returning to the road we passed where De Pontius lay and was dead. Sullivan said, 'This is the digger, the others were all storekeepers; this is the digger, let's cover him up, for should the others be found, they'll think he done it and sloped, meaning he had gone.
Still, rig a beard around that chiv of yours, and it's Solo to the life. 'If it's worth while, walk down to the ship with me, and I'll satisfy you in two minutes. Your word's good enough for me. Solo or no, taint my deal. 'Well, you've gone to some trouble to help me out of a hole, and I'm obliged. Done offered his hand, and the other shook it heartily.
The pumps were going steadily now, and a dirty stream of water was flowing down the ditch that had been made at one side of the small tram track. Harry looked down the hole, stared intently at nothing, then turned to the rusty hoist. "'Ere 's the thing we 've got to fix up now. This 'ere chiv wheel's all out of gear." "What makes your face so red?"
He went to tinkering with the big chiv wheel then, supported on its heavy timbers, and over which the cable must pass to allow the skip to travel on its rails down the shaft. Fairchild absently examined the engines and pumps, supplying water to the radiators and filling an oil cup or two. Then he turned swiftly, voicing that which was uppermost in his mind.
And I 'll bet she 's going with Maurice Rodaine! Oh! She's got a wye about'er!" "Oh, shut up!" growled Fairchild, but he grinned in schoolboy fashion as he said it. Harry poured half a can of oil upon the bearings of the chiv wheel with almost loving tenderness. "She 's got a wye about 'er!" he echoed. Fairchild suddenly frowned. "Just what do you mean? That she 's in love with Rodaine and just "
