"Gracious, Elfie, don't play so loud!" exclaimed Laura, who reëntered. "What's the matter?" Her visitor stopped playing. Smiling, she explained: "I shoved over that thing marked 'swell. I sure will have to speak to Jerry about this. I'm stuck on this 'swell' thing. Hurry up!" Noticing Laura's white, anxious-looking face, she exclaimed sympathetically: "Gee! you look pale!
He is so so humdrum and easily pleased, and wrapped up in his profession. I wish he were more intellectual. I do love him, of course I do, but he hasn't filled my life as I thought he would. He doesn't understand some of my thoughts about things. I often wonder why I can't be as easily pleased with everybody and everything as Elfie is. Nannie would say it is because my religion is not real.
She knew she had a wand that could touch him, and well and gratefully she resolved that its light blessing should "now and then" rest on his head; but he did not understand that; he was talking, whether lightly or seriously, and Elfie knew it was a little of both, he was talking of wanting her help, and was ignorant of the help that alone could avail him. "Oh that he knew but that!"
Fleda remembered two prettier nick-names which had been hers; but one had been given by dear lips long ago, and she was not going to have it profaned by common use; and "Elfie" belonged to Mr. Carleton. She would own to nothing but Fleda. "Well, Miss Fleda," said the doctor, "are you going to school?" "No sir." "You intend to live without such a vulgar thing as learning?"
'I think I will tell you what I purpose doing, she said rather solemnly; 'or shall I put it off till to-morrow? "'Tis the Sabbath," quoted Elfie, mimicking old Deb Howitt's tones. 'If it is anything startling, I would rather you kept it till to-morrow, said Agatha; 'I have had quite enough to startle me already. 'Oh, very well, responded Gwen unconcernedly; 'my news will keep.
"What makes you wear such a happy face?" said he, with an expression half envious, half regretful. "I don't know!" said Fleda, innocently. "You I suppose." He looked as bright as she did, for a minute. "Were you ever angry, Elfie?" "I don't know " said Fleda. " I don't know but I have." He smiled to see that, although evidently her memory could not bring the charge, her modesty would not deny it.
Then, gently and gravely, as if she had been a child, putting his arm round her shoulders, and drawing her to him, he whispered "My dear Elfie you need not fear being misunderstood " Fleda started, and looked up to see what he meant.
"Yes " said Fleda, hesitating and looking a little confused, "but will you let me write a note instead, Mr. Carleton?" "Certainly! but what are you thinking of, Elfie? what grave doubt is lying under your brow?" All Fleda's shadows rolled away before that clear bright eye.
Gwen started at the voice following her hot outburst so quickly, and Elfie stopped her hurried walk, and turned a little defiantly towards the new-comer. Mr. James Dane was a quiet-looking, sprucely-dressed man of over forty years of age. He seated himself with the greatest equanimity in the midst of the group, and Agatha in silence poured him out a cup of tea, and handed it to him.
Good-naturedly, she rattled on: It's such a grand day outside, and I've come around in my car to take you out. You know, I've got a new one, and it can go some. "I am sorry, but I can't go out this afternoon, Elfie." "What's the matter?" "You see, I'm staying home a good deal nowadays. I haven't been feeling very well, and I don't go out much." "I should think not.
