Eben hardly had the heart to finish the quilt at all. The quilting came off on Saturday afternoon, when Sara could be home from school. All Mrs. Eben's particular friends were ranged around the quilt, and tongues and fingers flew. Sara flitted about, helping her aunt with the supper preparations. She was in the room, getting the custard dishes out of the cupboard, when Mrs. George Pye arrived.
Ye only asked me if I had a woman on board." "Oh, well, you understood all right, so you needn't make believe you didn't. You knew I was looking for Miss Randall." "But she's dead, isn't she?" "Dead! When did she die?" "Why, they was searchin' fer her body down river." Donaster laughed, and reaching out laid his hand upon Eben's arm. "Say, stop your fooling, will you? Miss Randall's not dead.
"Well?" was all that Hetty said, as, panting for want of breath, she turned as shortly as a wild creature turns, and began to walk by Dr. Eben's side. He forgot, for the instant, all the old antagonisms; he forgot that, until yesterday, he had never spoken with Hetty Gunn; and, meeting her eager gaze with one about as eager, he said in a familiar tone: "Yes; well! I am going."
"Yes, and for the dear mercy sakes WHY have you got it on?" Kyan saw an opportunity for self-justification. "You TOLD me to put it on," he declared triumphantly. "You said yourself I'd better rig out in my Sunday clothes 'cause we might go to Eben's funeral. You know you did." "Hear the man!
It was Eben's voice, and there was no doubting its meaning. "Come up an' I'll brain ye," he roared. Instinctively Bill drew back, while an exclamation of annoyance and fear escaped his lips. In the twilight of evening he could see the threatening lad above and the uplifted stick. "Here, none of that, you fool," he cried. "What's your idea?" "Come up an' I'll show ye.
John dropped upon his knees by Eben's side and examined his burns. He could tell at once how serious they were, and that something must be done immediately. And as he knelt there, the boy moaned and his body trembled. Then his eyes opened, his lips moved, and he muttered words which the anxious watchers could not understand.
The tide now was running down, and this greatly aided the boat in her onward sweep. Far away in the east the sky rapidly reddened, and the light of a new day was dispelling the shades of night. Eben's heart caught the glow of the rising sun, and a spirit of elation possessed him.
The view she took was the common-sense view, which probably would have been taken by nine out of ten of all Dr. Eben's friends. Who could say that it did not stand to reason, that a man would be happier with a wife, young, beautiful, of angelic sweetness of nature, and the mother of sons and daughters, than with an old, childless, and less attractive woman.
"I said that Nathaniel Hammond, Captain Eben's son, came on the packet. I didn't meet him, but I'm sure it was he. Er Mrs. Coffin, are you there? Do you hear me?" The housekeeper laid the pen down beside the unfinished letter. "Yes," she said, "I hear you. Good night." For minutes she sat there, leaning back in her chair and staring at the wall.
Eben's plan contemplated neither a premature nor an over-tardy arrival at his own house. The two malefactors who were, he felt absolutely certain, using his roof for their lustful assignation, had the night before them. They would avail themselves of it with that sybarite deliberateness which had characterized their epicurean guile and deceit from the beginning. He consulted his watch.
