"I thought it was a cat and wanted to pick it up. I think the skunk was getting ready for me when our dog came along and scared the thing away." Ham Spink was indeed in a sorry plight. The smell was so bad that none of his friends wanted to go near him, and they begged him to keep his distance.
In the darkness the water seemed extra cold, and the lads who had received a ducking could not help but shiver as they crawled to the shore. They had gained possession of the raft, but they did not appear to be very happy over it. "Are you coming back with our boat or not?" demanded Ham Spink, after an awkward pause, during which our friends remained silent.
"Oh, it's only Snap Dodge and Whopper Dawson," drawled Ham Spink, lighting a fresh cigarette. "What do you want?" he asked, abruptly. "Nothing," answered Snap, coldly. "Then why did you come over?" "We wanted to find out who was camping here, that's all." "Humph! You are over there, ain't you?" went on Spink. "Yes." "Had any luck hunting?" "A little." "Just wait till we get down to business.
He strode up to the four lads with a dark look on his face, and this look grew even more resentful when he recognized them. "Ha! so you are going to come here in spite of my warnings, eh?" he said, harshly. "You haven't warned us or anything, Mr. Spink," answered Snap, calmly. "Can't you read? Doesn't the sign say, 'All trespassing forbidden'? That is plain English, isn't it?"
It was arranged that Snap and Whopper, with two of the Spink crowd, should take Jeff Thompson and turn him over to the authorities, at the same time notifying Simon Lundy of what they were doing and giving him the pawn-ticket for the watch. The boat belonging to the Spink crowd was righted and the oars were located, and this craft was used for the trip.
Then on they went as before. Soon they broke through the woods into a clearing, and on the opposite side of this saw a camp, with several boys lolling around a camp fire. They were members of the Spink crowd and included Dick Bush and Carl Dudder. "Say, where did you come from?" demanded Carl Dudder as he espied them and leaped to his feet. "From the woods," answered Shep calmly.
"Were you thinking we might meet Ham Spink and his crowd?" asked Giant during a short lull in the talk. "Yes," answered Shep. "And if we do, they'll sure try to make trouble for us." "I am not afraid of them," said Snap. "If they don't keep their distance we'll " "Give 'em as good as they send," finished Whopper. "But great Caesar's tombstone! just think of going camping again!"
"We'll be on hand," answered Snap, and then he and his chums moved further out into the lake with the boats and the canoe, and were soon lost to sight in the gloom of the night. "Well, this is the worst yet," growled Ike Akley, when he and his cronies were left alone. "We thought we were going to have the best of it and now they have turned the tables on us." "Have they?" came from Ham Spink.
The man carried a heavy cane, which he shook at them. "Hello, it's Mr. Spink!" cried Snap. "Come to warn us away, I suppose," grumbled the doctor's son. "Shall I tell him about what was done to our clothing?" "No," answered Whopper. "We are not certain it was Ham and Carl." Mr. Spink was a tall, overbearing man, who dressed almost as loudly as did his son.
Minnie was able to restrain her feelings so as to attend to her. She and the captain raised her gently, and led her into her own room, from whence the captain returned, and shut the door behind him. "Now, Spink," said he, "tell me all about it, an' be partic'lar."
