This is a p'int on which Christians may well boast, if boasting can be set down for Christianity in any manner or form, which I rather think it cannot. Howsever, all women have their trials. Red women have their'n in what I should call the nat'ral way, while white women take 'em innoculated like.
"Their'n gins a gallon a milkin'," she said, in rueful comparison. As she came up the slope with the piggin on her head, her husband was looking down from the porch with a lowering brow. "Why n't ye spen' the day a-milkin' the cow?" he drawled. "Dawdlin' yander in the cow-pen till this time in the mornin'! An' ter-morrer's Chrismus!" The word smote upon her weary heart with a dull pain.
Now, then; if them sharp-nosed ponies o' their'n don't happen to sniff the blood " The hope was dashed on the instant by the sudden snorting and shying of two or three of the horses in passing, and we laid hold of our weapons, keying ourselves to the fighting pitch. But, curiously enough, the riders made no move to pry into the cause.
When I've been along-shore afore now, a-vendin' of my clocks, and they began to raise my dander, by belittleing the Yankees, I always brought them up by a round turn by that requirement, 'How many fins has a cod, at a word. Well, they never could answer it; and then, says I, 'When you larn your own business, I guess it will be time enough to teach other folks their'n.
"It's a good thing the world aint all alike; there's Mis' Plumfield stop now, and I'll tell you all she sent; that big jar of lard, there's as good as eighteen or twenty pound and that basket of eggs, I don't know how many there is and that cheese, a real fine one, I'll be bound, she wouldn't pick out the worst in her dairy; and Seth fetched down a hundred weight of corn meal, and another of rye flour; now, that's what I call doing things something like; if everybody else would keep up their end as well as they keep up their'n, the world wouldn't be quite so one-sided as it is.
Old Joe and the others listened to him with stern faces; in fact, they received his protests and threats as his defence. When he had made an end Joe Westlake spoke thus: "Sloper I dunno your Christian name and I won't demean myself by asking of it, four of your countrymen and sorry they are that you should be a countrymen of their'n have patiently listened to what ye've had to say.
He was thinking about his wife and his children, away up yonder, and he was low and homesick; because he hadn't ever been away from home before in his life; and I do believe he cared just as much for his people as white folks does for their'n. It don't seem natural, but I reckon it's so.
She evidently had not even scant knowledge of that most absorbing passion, the love of gain, and she did not value money. "Somehow whenst folks dies by accident, it 'pears ter me a mistake somehows ez ef they war choused out'n time what war laid off fur them an' their'n by right." Evidently she did not lack sensibility.
'I was a thinkin' it's time to put her off, and she'll jist suit the French. They hante much for hosses to do, in a giniral way, but to ride about; and you won't say nothin' about her age, will you? it might endamnify a sale. "'Not I, sais I, 'I skin my own foxes, and let other folks skin their'n. I have enough to do to mind my own business, without interferin' with other people's.
They brought some "red licker" and I asked for some sugar for a toddy, not failing to cite the familiar Sut Lovingood saying that "there were about seventeen round the door who said they'd take sugar in their'n." The drink warmed me to my work, making me quicker, if not bolder, in invention.
