What is called resignation is confirmed desperation. From the desperate city you go into the desperate country, and have to console yourself with the bravery of minks and muskrats. A stereotyped but unconscious despair is concealed even under what are called the games and amusements of mankind. There is no play in them, for this comes after work.
"I I" responded Joe, his eyes still fixed on the bushes. "It was a Ugh!" cried he, starting, as he beheld the little thicket open, and a tall man rise up, holding in his hand a bunch of dead muskrats. "Dod speak on I want to hear what it was I've been laying here all this time waiting to know what great thing it was that skeered you so much.
"Do you know any Nanahboozhoo stories in which he tells anything about beavers or muskrats?" asked Sagastao. "Yes, indeed," replied Souwanas; "in nearly all the stories that are told about the forming of the new land after the great flood both the beaver and the muskrat are mentioned, as well as the other animals." "Tell us one of the stories," urged little Minnehaha.
Other muskrats now appeared, the wander-spirit seizing them all at once; and the males had many fierce fights, which left their naked tails scarred and bleeding. But the big muskrat, from the house in the alders, was denied the joy of battle, because none of his rivals were so hardy as to confront him.
For the Muskrats all had a warning signal that told everybody when there was danger. When one of them caught sight of Peter Mink he never failed if he was in the water to give a loud slap upon the surface with his tail. Master Meadow Mouse always had one ear that was listening for that slap.
And what mink would? Of course you must have it in mind to see a mink fish if you wish to see anything; but the day you really catch the mink fishing will likely be the day you went out to watch for muskrats. So an hour's waiting is rarely fruitless. The mink did not come, but another and quite as expert a fisher did.
"That's one reason we always try to fix it so that mink, otter, muskrats, fisher, and all animals that are trapped along the edge of streams manage to drown themselves soon after they are caught. It saves the pelt from being injured, too, by their crazy efforts to break away." "And what of that trap over there?
Kettles were quickly filled and a late supper was eaten, and then all lay down to sleep. Nothing disturbed their rest except the distant mournful screeches of the wild cats and some other wild animals, that were already, now that spring was coming, like themselves, on the lookout for muskrats.
A few blows with the axes knocked the house to pieces, and then there was quick work in spearing the almost helpless animals. In the houses near the channel of the stream, or where there was deep water, very often the clever muskrats had a channel dug from their little straw houses to the water. These "runs," as they are called, serve as a line of retreat whenever their home is attacked.
It seemed to him that nothing less than the Great Sturgeon, which lived far down the river, must have grabbed him by the feet." "Wish it had been!" said the Babe. "Just you wait!" said Uncle Andy. "Well, the next minute he looked down, and, lo and behold! all the water underneath him was alive with swimming muskrats, darting up and closing in upon him.
