The adjacent slopes of the Sierra Nevada and Wasatch ranges furnish numerous perennial streams which feed the lakes about the borders of the Basin, such as Great Salt Lake, Pyramid, Walker, Mono, Honey, and Owens lakes. The wet weather streams, flowing down the desert mountains for a short time each year, frequently form broad, shallow lakes which disappear with the coming of the summer sun.

Everything passed into our hands, and the various responsibilities of the place with all its dangers also passed to us. The natives, who belong to the Mono tribe, are treacherous. We knew nothing about them and their intentions.

Now some acids have a moderate specific appetite, whilst others possess a large one, and the same may be said of bases, and thus as an example we may have mono-, di-, and tri-acid salts, or mono-, di-, and tri-basic salts. In a tri-acid salt a certain voracity of the base is indicated, and in a tri-basic salt, of the acid.

"My good Pablo, your great faith deserves a great reward. It is my wish that, to-night, you and Carolina shall drink one pint each to my health. Have you given some of this wine to the Parkers?" Pablo shook his head vigorously. "That fellow, El Mono, was desirous of serving some to his master, and demanded of me the key, which I refused. Later, Señor Parker made the same demand.

"'Bloody meadow, white man call it. Him good name. Wish Mono come now I kill! I kill!" and, with dramatic gesture that almost startled Job, the old man waved his arms and was silent. Somehow after that the conversation drifted to religion. Bill talked of the Great Spirit, Job talked of God.

"I Believe the Lord has put me in the way of making a competency for my old age," said the dear old Doctor, as he seated himself in the armchair reserved for him at the cottage at North Beach. "How?" I asked. "I met a Texas man today, who told me of the discovery of an immensely rich silver mining district in Deep Spring Valley, Mono county, and he says he can get me in as one of the owners."

He gave her a quick, searching look, involuntary and serious, and for the moment that her eyes met his steadily, ere they fell, it seemed to him that he read something of vaster import than the claim Cyrus Johnson had failed to record. "I'll do it," he said. "I'll win it." The glad light in her eyes seemed to promise a greater meed than all the gold in the Mono claim.

We were to leave town quietly, after midnight, in two or three small parties, so as not to attract attention, and meet at dawn on the "divide" overlooking Mono Lake, eight or nine miles distant. We were to make no noise after starting, and not speak above a whisper under any circumstances. It was believed that for once Whiteman's presence was unknown in the town and his expedition unsuspected.

'Mono mush thig thu! you crathur, is it trying which yer head or the road is the hardest, ye are? Whisht now, don't cry, me fine boy, and maybe I'd sing a song for ye. 'Wisha then, cead mille failthe a thousand times, Irishman, whoever ye are! said the mother, seizing Andy's hand. 'And my heart warms to the tongue of the old counthry!

Both, like many other words in our language, are made up of two shorter words, and come from another language Greek. In both we have "phonic," evidently meaning the same in each case, limited or modified by the preceding part poly and mono. Phonic is the Anglicized Greek for sound. We use it in the English word telephonic. Now if we define mono and poly we shall understand these two long words.
