He wondered at his long blindness, and with an agony of uncertainty questioned whether Betsy's sympathetic comprehension of his old feeling for her cousin might not now hinder the fulfillment of his dearest hope. But at last the solemn serenity of the summer night stilled his unquiet spirit, and he fell asleep.

There was a new one, a strange one, a careless, whistling young man, with very bright socks, very yellow shoes, and very striped cuffs. He said, in answer to Betsy's inquiry: "Vaughan? Will Vaughan? Never heard the name," and immediately went on whistling and looking up and down the aisle over the heads of the little girls, who stood gazing up at him with very wide, startled eyes.

Betsy, it seems, was rather jealous, and John, to teaze her, had pretended that he was on terms of intimacy with his young Mistress, a statement for which there was not the slightest foundation. Betsy's suspicions, however, being once roused, were not easily set at rest, and this led her to pay more attention than previously to her young Mistress's proceedings.

Wilford knew that his father would never have presumed to break a seal belonging to his mother, but he had broken Katy's and he should continue breaking them, so he answered, laughingly; "Why, yes, I guess they do. My little wife has surely no secrets to hide from me?" "No secrets," Katy answered, "only I did not want you to see Aunt Betsy's letter, that's all."

"I want something that's alive," she said, "like a canary-bird, or one of Miss Betsy's hens. I think I'll buy a hen that will be most useful. If she laid an egg every day we could take turns in having a fresh egg." "That would be great," said Alice. Miss Betsy Porter was greatly interested in the children's plan.

Betsy, enthroned on those strong knees, wondered if any little girl had ever had such a beautiful birthday. About a month, after Betsy's birthday, one October day when the leaves were all red and yellow, two very momentous events occurred, and, in a manner of speaking, at the very same time.

In the midst of this process she saw the milk, and left off to lap it up eagerly; and in a jiffy she had drunk every drop and was licking the saucer loudly with her raspy tongue. And that was the end of the kittens' first lesson. That evening, as they sat around the lamp, Eleanor came and got up in Betsy's lap just like old times.

How, then, was he amazed when, just as the sun was going down and he was watching its last rays lingering on the brow of the hill across the pond, the library door was opened wide and the room seemed suddenly filled with life and joy, as a graceful figure, with reddish, golden hair, bounded across the floor, and winding its arms around his neck gave him the hearty kiss which Katy had in her mind when she declined Aunt Betsy's favorite vegetable.

This time she was completely satisfied, and her loud purring filled the room with a peaceable murmur. "There, now you're fixed for the winter," said Aunt Abigail. By and by, after Cousin Ann had popped some corn, old Shep got off the couch and came to stand by Betsy's knee to get an occasional handful. Eleanor opened one eye, recognized a friend, and shut it sleepily.

While Frank clasped her in his arms and pressed his mouth to hers, I raised his shirt, and pointing his weapon at the mark, he thrust himself forward, and it slipped into her in an instant. Betsy's consternation was extreme as she felt the warm flesh within her.
