So pardon me, my vitals are a writ * Whose superscription are my tears that ran: Heigh ho! my cousin seemeth Houri may * Come down to earth by reason of Rizwan: 'Scapes not the dreadful sword lunge of her look * Who dares the glancing of those eyne to scan: O'er Allah's wide spread world I'll roam and roam, * And from such exile win what bread I can Yes, o'er broad earth I'll roam and save my soul, * All but her absence bear ing like a man With gladsome heart I'll haunt the field of fight, * And meet the bravest Brave in battle van!"

His "hair-breadth 'scapes" under these frequent exigencies, were, no doubt, among the most interesting adventures of his life, furnishing rare material, could they be procured, for the poet and romancer. Unhappily, while the chronicles show the frequent emergency which attended his painful condition, they furnish nothing more. We are without details.

Now two of them bear their flowers in bracted whorls, condensed into umbels at the summits of a scape. The scapes themselves are inserted in the axils of the basal leaves, and produce the flowers above them. In the third species, Primula acaulis, this scape is lacking and the flowers are inserted singly in the axils on long slender stalks.

The accident by a musket-shot, and the heroic reply imputed to Flora, relate to a lady of rank not long deceased. And scarce a gentleman who was 'in hiding' after the battle of Culloden but could tell a tale of strange concealments, and of wild and hair's-breadth 'scapes, as extraordinary as any which I have ascribed to my heroes.

"These are "the battles, sieges, fortunes, The most disastrous chances Of moving accidents by flood and field," that enlist our sympathies in both parts of the Annals; and of these people, with their "hair-breadth 'scapes in the imminent deadly breach,"

This was actually the first time he had had a chance of forming an intimacy with a young man of his own age, education, and position, and he caught at it with avidity, the more so because Captain Bruce seemed likely to supply all the things which he had not and never could have knowledge of the world outside; "hair-breadth 'scapes" and adventurous experiences, told with a point and cleverness that added to their charm.

"of most disastrous chances, Of moving accidents by flood and field, Of hair-breadth scapes i' the imminent deadly breach, Of being taken by the insolent foe And sold to slavery." How much depends upon the point of view! Here was I, ready to laugh; while poor Desdemona only thought, "'Twas pitiful, 'twas wondrous pitiful." Dear sympathetic soul!

Then he wept and began repeating: The blear eyed 'scapes the pits * Wherein the lynx eyed fall: A word the wise man slays * And saves the natural: The Moslem fails of food * The Kafir feasts in hall: What art or act is man's? * God's will obligeth all! When I awoke I went to the street called "Bayn al-Kasrayn" Between the two Palaces and presently returned and rested my night in the Khan.

I have much to tell you of "hair-breadth 'scapes in th' imminent deadly breach," with all the eventful history of a life, the early years of which owed so much to your kind tutorage; but this at an hour of leisure. My kindest compliments to Mrs. Murdoch and family. I am ever, my dear Sir, your obliged friend, CLIV. To MR. CUNNINGHAM. ELLISLAND, 8th August 1790.

The scapes themselves are of varying length, often very short, and seldom long, and their umbels display the involucre of bracts in a manner quite analogous to that of the Primula officinalis and P. elatior.
