The men have been very busy in the sitting-room, so we spent most of our time in the bedroom, which is more than half-full of cases and baggage. Repetto has just had supper with us, and has been telling all about Captain Kerry's visit in the Pandora. On Easter Sunday we had eight o'clock Communion; twelve were present. As there are no Communion rails we knelt in front of two forms.
He stepped past the Chinaman into the dimly lighted room. As he did so, the cause of an apparent deformity which had characterized the outline of Sin Sin Wa became apparent. From his left shoulder the raven partly arose, moving his big wings, and: "Smartest leg!" it shrieked in Kerry's ear and rattled imaginary castanets. The Chief Inspector started, involuntarily. "Damn the thing!" he muttered.
These sounds were so deadened by the clammy mist that they might have proceeded from some gnome's workshop deep in the bowels of the earth. The blows of a pile-driver at work on the Surrey shore suggested to Kerry's mind the phantom crew of Hendrick Hudson at their game of ninepins in the Katskill Mountains. Suddenly: "Is that you, Bryce?" he asked.
Kerry's savagery would have awed any man, even though he had supposed it to be the idle threat of a passionate man. But Zani Chada knew all men, and he knew this one.
There were those, Seton Pasha among them, who would have regarded the groan and the convulsive movements of Kerry's body with keen suspicion. And because the Chief Inspector suffered from no illusions respecting the genius of Sin Sin Wa, the apparent failure of the one-eyed Chinaman to recognize these preparations for attack nonplussed the Chief Inspector.
Kerry's host taught him to snare woodcock and pheasants shoot them the Irishman could not, since the excitement of the thing made him fire wild. "Now ain't that the very divil!" he would cry, after he had let his third bird get away unharmed. "Ef I was shootin' at a man, I'd be as stiddy as a clock. Gad! I'd be cool as an ice-wagon.
"We all follow our vocations in life," resumed the Eurasian, "to the best of our abilities. But is professional kudos not too dearly bought at the price of a loved one lost for ever? A far better bargain would be, shall we say, ten thousand pounds, as the price of a silk handkerchief " Kerry's fierce blue eyes closed for a fraction of a second.
I give up tryin' to pump him just as soon as I made up my mind it was a woman. That shuts a man's mouth like a poor-box. "Next week's fixed for the Logan killin' case, is it?" "Monday comin', for sure. I wouldn't like to be in Mr. Kerry's shoes.
Kerry's teeth snapped together, so that he seemed to bite off the words. "I don't see a Turk present." Seton smiled quietly. "My friend uses a title which was conferred upon me some years ago by the ex-Khedive," he said. "My name is Greville Seton." Inspector Kerry glanced back across his shoulder. "Unlock your ears, Coombes." He looked at Gray. "What is your name?" "Quentin Gray."
But when that little old brown chicken scoots a-scutterin' up out o' the grass like a hummin'-top, it rattles me." His teacher apparently took no note of the significance contained in this statement; yet Kerry's very ears were red as it slipped out, and he felt uneasily for the handcuffs, which no longer clinked in his pocket, but now lay carefully hidden under his fern bed.
