About half an hour later Jiggs Lenehan strolled into the office wearing a huge grin on his face. "'Pears like everybody in town wants to read the Kicker to-day," he said with a joyous cackle. "Never had so much fun sellin' them. Gimme some more," he added breathlessly; "they's a gang down to the station howlin' for them.
"I fear, Miss Gentle," began Mr Blurt, when his visitor was seated in the back shop, and Mrs Murridge had been expelled to the rear as usual, and Jiggs had been left on guard in the front "I fear that you may think it rude in me to make such a proposal, but I am driven to it by necessity, and the fact is, I want you to become a nurse." "A nurse, Mr Blurt!" "There, now, don't take offence.
When he came in contact with Jiggs, Mr Blurt believed he had at last secured a prize, and confided that belief to Mrs Murridge. So he had, as regards honesty. Jiggs was honest to the core; but as to other matters he was defective to say the least.
Yes, sir, we can shake our legs or soe. Suc. So said so don, brave ladd; come, letts have a daunce, some daunce and some play. Mus. Anything to please you, noble Captaine. Suc. Lively then, my hearts; some country Jigg or soe. Oh those playes that I have seene of youre, with their Jiggs ith tayles of them like your French forces! Strike up there! Grimes. Well don, my hearts; drinke, drinke. Suc.
James, the champion featherweight fusser of the school, followed. He carried a campchair and a hot-water bottle. Petey Simmons, five feet four in his pajamas, and Jiggs Jarley, champion catch-as-catch-can-and-hold-on-tight waltzer in college, came next.
"Tom Sternhold's" songs were entitled to be called prick-songs because they had notes of music printed with them. Hence they were irreverently called "Genevan Jiggs," and "Beza's Ballets." There is much difference shown in the wording of these various editions of Sternhold and Hopkins' Psalms.
Near the Kicker office he met Jiggs Lenehan. Followed by the youth he reached the office to find that Potter had completed the press work and that several hundred copies of the paper, the ink still moist on its pages, were stacked in orderly array on the imposing stone. In a very brief time Jiggs burst out of the office door, a bundle of papers under his arm, and began the work of distribution.
He smiled at the boy, looked back into the composing room and saw that Potter had ceased his labors and was leaning on a type case, watching him soberly. He grinned broadly at Potter and turned to Jiggs. "How many Kickers did you sell?" "Two hundred an' ten," returned the latter; "everybody bought them." He took a step forward; his hands clenching with the excitement that still possessed him.
If you will agree to let up on this push-drive-urge stuff; stop long enough to read a book, to laugh at Jiggs or Popeye or Dagwood, or any of the other funnies, go with me over to Adot where the mine-run folks can see what a big, fine upstanding partner I've got, why I'll have that little, old nine thousand in here by Saturday.
Recovering speech, she entered the shop and introduced herself. The introduction was needless. Mr Blurt recognised her at once, dropped his paper, extended both hands, gave her a welcome that brought even Jiggs back to the verge of sanity, and had her into the back shop, whence he expelled Mrs Murridge to some other and little-known region of the interior.
