"Maybe Whopper's left his shaving outfit behind," suggested Giant. "Humph!" muttered the youth mentioned. "Be sure and take Giant's hobby horse with you." And then there was a general laugh, in the midst of which Snap shoved off from the boathouse dock. It was arranged that Shep and Whopper should row for the first few miles and then be relieved by Snap and Giant.

Snap's grip was good, and for the moment Whopper's progress was stayed. "Don't move!" called out Snap as soon as he could catch his breath. "Press down on the rocks for all you are worth!" Whopper understood and pressed down, and thus both boys lay quiet for several seconds. Whopper was but three feet from the edge of the cliff and Snap was just above him.

He struck a match, to see how the others were faring, and as he gazed around he saw a small stream of water coming in through a hole in the tent. The stream was falling close to Whopper's head. Just then Whopper turned and the stream took him directly in the ear. "Wh -wow!" spluttered Whopper, awakening and squirming around. "What's the matter here?

It was cloudy too, and a stiff breeze from the east had begun to blow. "We'll have to take care how we pitch our tent to-night," was Whopper's comment. "Unless I miss my guess, we'll have rain by to-morrow morning." "Oh, don't say that!" cried Giant. "I don't want it to rain yet." "It won't hold off for you or anybody else," returned Snap.

"I asked my father that, and he said most likely by next Monday. He will want to give us all some instructions before we leave. And he wants us to read this book," and Shep drew a small volume from his pocket. "What is it?" "A book on how to take the best photographs of wild animals." "Humph! It's easy to get a picture -if you can find the animal," was Whopper's comment.

When the boys ran to Whopper's side they found his eyes closed. He was breathing faintly and that was all. "Is he -he dead?" asked Giant hoarsely, for Whopper was very dear to the small youth. "No, but he is badly hurt," answered Snap. "Shep, run and fill your cap with water. I'll loosen his coat and collar."

"But this is strange," he continued. "Thought Ham was too much of a dude to throw snowballs," was Whopper's comment. "Why, he wears a new necktie every day now, and new patent leather shoes, and new gloves, and " "Don't pile it on too thick, Whopper," laughed Shep. "But I admit, he is a dude and no mistake." "And a sneak to run away as soon as he hit old Felps," finished Giant.

The blood was pouring from the sharp cut in Whopper's cheek and his coat was torn on the shoulder from the deer's hoofs. When the water was brought, Snap bathed him tenderly, and Giant fanned him with a cedar branch. In a few minutes he opened his eyes. "Ta -take the de -deer away!" he murmured. "It's all right, Whopper, the deer is dead," answered Snap. "Oh!" Whopper breathed a sigh of relief.

When he gained the opening he peered down into it. "Shep! Are you there?" he called out, anxiously. "Yes," was the faint answer. "Is that you, Snap?" "Yes. Is that wildcat alive?" "I guess not. But he has almost smothered me." "How did you get down there?" "Slipped down. Get something and help me to get out." "I will." "Poor Shep! What a place to be in all night!" was Whopper's comment.

I am so tired I feel like sleeping standing up," answered Shep. Whopper arose, and waiting to make certain that his companion was wide awake, Shep threw himself on the couch, which had been formed of some leaves found at the rear of the hollow. He soon fell into a troubled sleep, which lasted about three hours, when he awoke at the sound of Whopper's voice calling him.
