From 1851, when the main line was opened, until 1868, this man was a director and, for the larger part of the time, treasurer. Born in 1797, he had driven cattle when a boy from his native town of Carmel in Putnam County to the New York City market and, for some years later, he had been proprietor of the Bull's Head Tavern.

"Koswell & Company got scared mightily," mused Dick. "Well, I am glad, Tom, that you are out of it." "And as a token of your escape we'll present you with this," added Sam, and brought forth the package from Dan Baxter. Tom was much surprised, and listened to the story about the former bully of Putnam Hall with interest. "Good for Dan!" he cried. "I'll write him a letter the first chance I get."

"That is true, but how did this get here, Pop?" As Captain Putnam paused he held up a stud set with a ruby-the very stud the cadet Weeks had lost! "Dat dat stud I never seen dat shirt-stud before, cap'n, 'deed I didn't," stammered the waiter. "That is certainly Weeks' stud; I remember it well," put in George Strong. "He showed it to me one day, stating it was a gift from his aunt."

All agreed to help him, and did what he asked of them without delay. The day for the game dawned clear and bright, and promptly on time the eleven started for Cedarville in the carryall, which had just come from the repair shop. Some of the cadets went on their bicycles, and Captain Putnam and some of the teachers drove over in carriages.

She's been at me," and he tossed his tousled black head towards Audrey, but the other had no need of the direction, "she's been at me today about how cruel I was to shoot a poor harmless house-breaker, and how I have the devil in me against poor harmless natives. But I was a good-natured man once as good-natured as Putnam."

By this time Mrs. Stanhope was on deck also, gazing curiously at those on the sloop. "I believe this is Mr. Josiah Crabtree?" went on Ruff coldly. "Eh? Why er you have the advantage of me!" stammered the former teacher of Putnam Hall, falling back in dismay. "Are you Josiah Crabtree or not?" "I am; but " "Then consider yourself my prisoner, Mr. Crabtree." "Your prisoner!" "That is what I said."

I was locked in and treated to bread and milk for supper, and he wanted to steal the keys of my trunk and valise from me." "Steal!" ejaculated Josiah Crabtree. "That is what it amounted to, for the keys, and boxes are my property." "Mr. Crabtree merely wanted to see that your baggage contained nothing improper," put in Captain Putnam.

The term at Putnam Hall Military Academy was at an end, and the school days of the three Rover boys at that institution were now a thing of the past. Each had graduated with honors, yet all were a trifle sad to think that there would be no going back to a place where they had made so many friends.

The good fortune with which Major Putnam had been favored during three years of fighting a wily and treacherous foe, suddenly deserted him when, in the month of August, 1758, he found himself confronted by an Indian warrior of herculean frame, during a skirmish near Fort St. Anne.

Putnam asked him solemnly whether he had not, immediately before the crime, meditated at any time on the advantages that would accrue to him from Parkman's death. Webster replied "Never, before God!" He had, he protested, no idea of doing Parkman an injury until the bitter tongue of the latter provoked him.
