In starting for Dognacska and Reschitza, we had before us a ride of more than thirty miles through a very rough country, and with uncertain prospects of accommodation, so I took with me all my travelling "contraptions," as they say in the west of England. The weather was excessively hot the morning H and I started on our expedition.
"Did I say all that?" he asked, scratching his head. "Yes, and a lot more! You said something about an airship." "Humph! Well, that's it!" "What is?" "An airship! I might as well tell you, I reckon. I'm having one of them contraptions made." "What contraptions? Oh, Ezra!" "An airship," he answered. "I'm going to have one, and win a twenty thousand dollar prize from the government.
They were halfway up the curve of the Shed's roof, at the edge of the great opening, and they could see everything, from the pushpot pilots as they were checked into their contraptions, to the sedate arrival of the big brass at the grandstand below. There was a reverberant humming from the Shed now. It might have been the humming of wind blowing across its open section.
"You are acting very queerly," she sniffed. "You are concealing something from me." Just then the door opened and Gladolia called, "Mis' Hallock! Mis' Hallock! I've come to tell you I'se done lef' dis place." My wife turned her head a moment. "But why, Gladolia?" "I ain't stayin' round no place 'long wid dem Ouija board contraptions. I'se skeered of hoodoos. I's done gone, I is."
He wards off their strokes with enormous brattices of wood, wing-walls of logs bolted together, and such other contraptions as experience teaches. He bears the giants no malice; they do their work, he his. What bothers him a little is that the wind of their blows sometimes rips pines out of the opposite hill-sides explodes, as it were, a whole valley.
"An aeroplane!" he burst forth in thrilling tones; "and the sillies down there think it's just a frightfully big bird about to carry them off. Hey, Frank, perhaps the government has got one of the new contraptions after all!" "Go slow," said Frank. "Suppose you look a bit closer, my boy. Isn't there something familiar about that same craft up yonder?" "It's it's a biplane, Frank!" gurgled Andy.
"Well," said Morgan, with one of his characteristic shrugs, "I guess I'll have to spruce up a bit, before he comes." "That is so, Morgan," said Houston, kindly, "I wouldn't want Mr. Blaisdell to see you as you look this morning; I'm too much a friend of yours myself for that." "Oh well, I'll be all right before he gets here. Who's going down to meet that fellow and his contraptions?"
They told us that huge contraptions covered with tarpaulin were lying on the side of the road, with six-pounder guns protruding from their sides; in conversation the drivers referred to them as land boats, and some, as land dreadnaughts. Speculation ran rife as to their purpose. We were soon to see. Next morning as dawn was breaking, "Stand to!" rang out.
I could even find a needle in a haystack, I believe, with one of these jim-dandy contraptions." "All right, Julius, we'll appoint you head tracker, then," chuckled Horatio. "But, after all, perhaps we'll run across our comrade yet, before we get out of this tangle. We're about to come to the most critical point of the entire trip, remember, for the old quarry is just ahead of us."
I may add that I never saw a machine of the kind actually at work in the diggings. Just now, however, I looked on the owners of these contraptions with envy, and thought ourselves at a disadvantage with only our picks, shovels, and axes. But we had with us a wonderful book that went far toward cheering up the poorly equipped.
