People reciprocally profess wishes which they seldom form; and concern, which they seldom feel. This is not the case between you and me, where truth leaves no room for compliments. 'Dii tibi dent annos, de to nam caetera sumes', was said formerly to one by a man who certainly did not think it. With the variation of one word only, I will with great truth say it to you.

It has long been customary, on occasion of the august ceremony of the coronation of the Popes, to address to them, with due solemnity, the words: Annos Petri tu non ridebis. His Pontificate was prolonged beyond the years of Peter at Rome.

Then, pitching on a note which brought the tune well within the compass of even Fenton's growling bass, he began the school songs, "Adsis musa canentibus Laeta voce canentibus Longos clara per annos Haileyburia floreat." House feeling, local patriotism to the tune of "The Maiden of Bashful Fifteen," was well enough.

Twice had the Annos sought to collect, the first time while Nalasu still retained his eyesight. Nalasu had discovered their trap, circled about it, and in the rear encountered and slain Anno himself, the father, thus doubling the blood-debt. Then had come his accident. While refilling many-times used Snider cartridges, an explosion of black powder put out both his eyes.

'Sub hoc conditorio, he crooned, 'situm est corpus Joannis, magni et orthodoxi Imperatoris, qui imperium Africanum nobiliter ampliavit, et multos per annos mundum feliciter rexit. He must have chosen this epitaph long ago. He lay for a few seconds with his head on his arms, his breast heaving with agony. 'No one will come after me.

Thenceforth the Annos had feared the thorns too greatly to dare again, although ever their vindictiveness smouldered and they lived in hope of the day when Nalasu's head should adorn their ridgepole. In the meantime the state of affairs was not that of a truce but of a stalemate. The old man could not proceed against them, and they were afraid to proceed against him.

Nevertheless, Suetonius tells us he wrote a lyric poem and Greek imitations of Euphorion, Rhianus, and Parthenius; but it was the minute questions of mythology that chiefly attracted him, points of useless erudition like those derided by Juvenal: "Nutricem Anchisae, nomen patriamque novercae Anchemoli, dicat quot Acestes vixerit annos, Quot Siculus Phrygibus vini donaverit urnas."

Sunt mihi bis septem præstanti corpore Nymphæ: Quarum, quæ forma pulcherrima, Deïopeiam Connubio jungam stabili, propriamque dicabo: Omnes ut tecum meritis pro talibus annos Exigat, et pulchrâ faciat te prole parentem," than he listens to the reflections of two British tars. "I think, from the scud, we shall have wind from the south'ard, Bill."

Of the construction and consecration of this holy place we read in an inscription on marble over the door that leads into the sacristy, in the following words: CUM HOC TEMPLUM MARCO EVANGELISTÆ DICATUM MAGNIFICIS SUMPTIBUS CL. V. COSMI MEDICIS TANDEM ABSOLUTUM ESSET, EUGENIUS QUARTUS ROMANUS PONTIFEX MAXIMA CARDINALIUM, ARCHIEPISCOPORUM, EPISCOPORUM, ALIORUMQUE SACERDOTUM FREQUENTIA COMITATUS, ID CELEBERRIMO EPIPHANIÆ DIE, SOLEMNI MORE SERVATO, CONSECRAVIT. TUM ETIAM QUOTANNIS OMNIBUS, QUI EODEM DIE FESTO ANNUAS STATASQUE CONSECRATIONIS CEREMONIAS CASTE PIEQUE CELEBRARINT VISERINTVE, TEMPORIS LUENDIS PECCATIS SUIS DEBITI SEPTEM ANNOS TOTIDEMQUE QUADRAGESIMAS APOSTOLICA REMISIT AUCTORITATE, A. MCCCCXLII.

Eia, agite, o socii, manibus profundite flores, Lilia per tumulum, violamque rosamque recentem Spargite; victricis armis superaddite lauros, Et tumulo tales mucrone inscribite voces: Hic jacet hostilis gentis timor et decus omne Gallorum, Georgius, conditus ante diem: Credidit hunc Lachesis juvenem dum cerneret annos, Sed palmas numerans credidit esse senem.
