Not Tacitus, as I think, but some author whose essay De Oratoribus was written about the time of Tacitus, and whose work has come to us with the name of Tacitus, has told us of Cicero that he was a master of logic, of ethics, and of physical science. Everybody remembers the passage in Juvenal, "Sed Roma parentem Roma patrem patriæ Ciceronem libera dixit."

In a law of Romulus, we read Si nurus ... plorassit ... sacra divis parendum estod, where the full form of the imperative occurs, the only instance in the whole range of the language. A somewhat similar law, attributed to Numa, contains some interesting forms: "Si parentem puer verberit asi ole plorasit, puer divis parentum verberat? ille ploraverit diis sacer esto."

When his scholars were caught flirting with the damsel, they were wont to excuse themselves by saying that they were only "commenting on the works of Cujas." On this the following epigram was composed: "Videras immensos Cujaci labores AEternum patri commeruisse decus: Ingenio haud poterat tam magnum aequare parentem Filia; quod potuit corpore fecit opus."

Sunt mihi bis septem præstanti corpore Nymphæ: Quarum, quæ forma pulcherrima, Deïopeiam Connubio jungam stabili, propriamque dicabo: Omnes ut tecum meritis pro talibus annos Exigat, et pulchrâ faciat te prole parentem," than he listens to the reflections of two British tars. "I think, from the scud, we shall have wind from the south'ard, Bill."
