These Germans had to make a quick decision: Would they try a leap for the dugouts or a leap to the rear? They decided on flight. A hundred-yard sprint and they would be out of that murderous swath laid so accurately on a narrow belt. They ran as men will only run from death. No goose-stepping or "after you, sir" limited their eagerness.

"It's the beginning of the end for the Germans," said Phœbe jubilantly as she ran to Mother Bab with the news. "If they once start running they'll sprint pretty lively. We'll have to tell David about the excitement in town when the whistles blew but, ach, I forgot! He won't think that was much excitement after he's been in real excitement." Mother Bab laughed with the girl.

Mr Sprint acknowledgeth the Reformation of England to have been defective, and saith, “It is easy to imagine of what difficulty it was to reform all things at the first, where the most part of the privy council, of the nobility, bishops, judges, gentry, and people, were open or close Papists, where few or none of any countenance stood for religion at the first, but the Protector and Cranmer.” The church of Scotland was blessed with a more glorious and perfect reformation than any of our neighbour churches.

But finally the bass catches up with the cornets, and the others sprint or put on the brakes, and they land on the fourth or fifth beat together. For a few minutes it's great. They go over the first four bars in a bunch, and old Dobbs gets the half note and change of key in the bass, which usually floors him, like a professional. It is a proud and happy moment for the leader. But it doesn't last.

I knew I was being watched admiringly. I could see it out of the tail of my eyes. So I threw forward in a final sprint, that brought me up, my eyes stinging with the salt of sweat, my legs aching ... my chest heaving.... "Good boy," complimented Dunn, coming up to me, and patting me on the back ... Gregory, I'm for you. I'm so glad you've come out a clean, fine, clear-cut Christian."

In a hundred-yard sprint, Jimmie Dale raced it a half block to the station, tore up the steps and a moment later dropped nonchalantly into a seat and pulled an evening newspaper from his pocket. Jimmie Dale got off at the second station down, crossed the street, mounted the steps of the elevated again, and took the next train uptown.

I knowed him when he was ridin' on freight cars; now he's a swell, though he's a long sprint from bein' a gentleman.

But let us hear what Mr Sprint can say to the contrary. He allegeth, the priests’ breaking of the Sabbath, David’s eating of the shewbread, and the apostles’ practising of very hurtful ceremonies; all which things being unlawful were done lawfully, to further greater duties.

When that inning was over the locals had reduced the lead of Mechanicsburg to one run; and they fully anticipated wiping that slight advantage out in the next round. Tyree still held them close. They knocked several fouls, and one man actually went out through Juggins in far right, managing to sprint fast enough to grapple with a soaring fly that came his way across the foul line.

Whether it was a man or a boy he could not tell in the darkness. "Hold on there!" cried the young inventor, but, naturally, the fleeing one did not stop. Tom began to sprint, and as it was slightly down hill, he made good time. The figure ahead of him was running well, too, but Tom who could see better, now that he was out from under the trees, noticed that he was gaining.
