"But," said William W. Kolderup at last, "you have not remained six months in the hold, I suppose?" "No!" answered Seng Vou. "Where have you been, then?" "On the island!" "You!" exclaimed Godfrey. "Yes." "Then the smoke?" "A man must have a fire!" "And you did not attempt to come to us, to share our living?" "A Chinaman likes to live alone," quietly replied Seng Vou.
A seng may be defined as a collection of families sprung from some common ancestress or ancestor. As an instance of these sengs I may describe the community known as the lai seng which owns land in the neighbourhood of Laitkynsew, the area owned being known as the "ri lai seng," or land of the three clans.
"O amiable Hi Seng," replied Kai Lung with extreme affability, "doubtless you are the most expert of water-carriers, and on a hot and dusty day, when the insatiable desire of all persons is towards a draught of unusual length without much regard to its composition, the sight of your goat-skins is indeed a welcome omen; yet when in the season of Cold White Rains you chance to meet the belated chair-carrier who has been reluctantly persuaded into conveying persons beyond the limit of the city, the solitary official watchman who knows that his chief is not at hand, or a returning band of those who make a practise of remaining in the long narrow rooms until they are driven forth at a certain gong-stroke, can you supply them with the smallest portion of that invigorating rice spirit for which alone they crave?
Marks College Band and we know who is at the head of that Band, and why it plays for our feast. Da Hua dare not look up for she too knows it is for her that the Head Master is bringing congratulations thus. When the Band stops playing all clap hands for more, Miss Powers stand up and say, "Seng Meng. Bing Ang, and many times thank you. Ke Dang."
So he stooped over the crates and pretended to be exceedingly interested in them, hauling and pushing them about and reading the address of the consignee who had failed to call for his goods. The crates were both consigned to the Gin Seng Company, 714 Dupont Street, San Francisco.
"Perchance they of the eleven villages sent some special message of gratifying loyalty which you would relate without delay?" "They slept, omnipotence, or without doubt it would be so," replied Ten-teh. "Truly," agreed the Emperor. "It was night when you set forth, my father?" "The shadows had fallen deeply upon the Upper Seng Valley," said Ten-teh evasively.
So Godfrey had good reason to interfere in favour of the intruder, and Captain Turcott, who pretended to be angrier than he really was, gave up the idea of sending Seng Vou overboard to battle with the waves of the Pacific. Seng Vou, however, did not return to his hiding-place in the hold, though he was rather an incubus on board.
Rachel, Ned's wife, watched them, her lips twisted in a fond, wise smile, as she pressed the big loaf to her breast and cut thick slices of bread-and-jam. She had made a place for you beside her. "She sengs ersen to slape wid a li'l' song she maakes," Rachel said. "Tha'll seng that li'l' song for Mester Dan, wuntha?" Dumpling hid her face and sang.
"They showed me your name an' address, an' they won't leave th' ship, where I got 'em locked up in my cabin, until you come an' take 'em away. Couple o' relatives of yours, I should imagine." Gin Seng smiled his bland Chinese smile.
Now I think my readers will agree with me in believing that 'Jack, with all his faults, is a more reliable man to stand 'shoulder to shoulder' with in time of danger than Ali Mahmood Seng, the Lascar. In cold and storm and peril most of us would prefer 'our ain folk' alongside of us. What a heart-stirring comment on the character of the British sailor is there in the passage above quoted!
