Judge John S. Keyes presided, and the principal after dinner speeches were made by William M. Evarts, George William Curtis, George F. Hoar, E. Rockwood Hoar, James Russell Lowell, and others. September 15. The town of Hingham, Mass., celebrated the quarter millenial of its incorporation as a town.
On two momentous questions, the tariff and slavery, he vacillated, his dubious action concerning the latter costing him his popularity in New England. From a photograph by Rockwood of an old daguerreotype. Yet in many respects the most interesting figure in the party was Henry Clay. He was born amid the swamps of Hanover County, Va., and had grown up in most adverse surroundings.
It was also necessary for F to make a journey to Christchurch on business, and as he probably would be detained there for nearly a week, it was arranged that one of the young gentlemen from Rockwood should ride over and escort me back there, to remain during F 's absence.
Gilbert Rockwood as a missionary of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, to labor among the Tuscarora Indians. Invocation and reading of the Scriptures were performed by Rev. Lemuel Clark, of Lewiston; first prayer by Rev. John Elliott, of Youngstown, and former missionary at Tuscarora; sermon by Rev. E. Parmely, of Jamestown, consecrating prayer by the Rev.
A. P. Rockwood was drillmaster. Brother Rockwood was then a captain, but was afterwards promoted to be colonel of the Host of Israel. I was then fourth corporal of the company. The people were regularly drilled and taught military tactics, so that they would be ready to act when the time came for returning to Jackson County, the land of our inheritance.
The road party left the old road and made a ploughed furrow across the downs to Rockwood Creek, which we followed, and camped the night there. Fitzmaurice, whilst riding after the bullocks, met Mr.
Rockwood, as she unfastened the front door with her latch-key and held it open for Helen to enter. As they entered the hall they were greeted with a series of muffled thumps and bangs. "I do wish Mary would remember what I have so often told her about breaking her kindling upon the cellar floor," she exclaimed. Rattle, rattle! Bang, bang! and then a crash as though the roof were falling.
"Out in the fields beyant, wid her bit av a camela takin' her picter, Oi'm thinkin'. 'Twas there she said she'd be goin' afther she came out of the pot-closet saints have mercy! Could she git out at all, at all?" and Mary tore down the stairs, with Mrs. Rockwood and Helen close at her heels. She reached the closet, flung open the door, and beheld a spectacle.
A moment later the front door slammed, and two pairs of feet came tearing up the stairs as though pursued by Boer cavalry, and two eager voices cried: "We've got 'em! We've got 'em! We've got 'em!" and both girls came tearing into the room to cast themselves and two very suggestive looking parcels upon Mrs. Rockwood.
A few moments later both she and Helen were out in the fields back of the house, and had snapped charming little scenes. Bemoaning her unintentional trick, Mary went back to her work, while Mrs. Rockwood went up to her room to laugh heartily over the mishap, never suspecting that the funniest part would appear in the sequel. "We've taken them! We've taken them!"
