Courtland remained to represent the company as superintendent at Redlands, and with the transfer of the English investments Champney retired, as he had suggested, to a smaller venture of his own, on a plantation a few miles distant which the company had been unable to secure. During this interval Courtland had frequent interviews with Miss Sally, and easy and unrestrained access to her presence.
The floating draperies of the artful and shameless Miss Sally were already disappearing among the tombs in the direction of the hollow. The house occupied by the manager of the Drummond Syndicate in Redlands the former residence of a local lawyer and justice of the peace was not large, but had an imposing portico of wooden Doric columns, which extended to the roof and fronted the main street.
"If you're a good girl," he said, "you shall go and stay with Nick at Redlands when you are well enough." She looked up at him with puzzled eyes. "I thought Nick was in India, Daddy." "He was," said Dr. Jim. "But he has come back." "Then he is at Redlands?" she asked eagerly. He met her look with his black brows drawn in a formidable frown. "Go slow!" he said. "Yes, he is staying at Redlands."
"Thou art welcome," said King Arthur, "for thou hast been long a foe to me and mine, and truly I am much beholden to the knight who sent thee. Then the Knight of the Redlands knelt to the king, and told him of his promise to Sir Beaumains to use never more such shameful customs; and how he had so done but at the prayer of a lady whom he loved.
And when Sir Beaumains heard her words, he sprang upon his feet with strength, and leaping to his sword, he caught it; and with many heavy blows pressed so sorely on the Knight of the Redlands, that in the end he smote his sword from out his hand, and, with a mighty blow upon the head, hurled him upon the ground.
She marvelled afterwards at the complete trust with which that night he had managed to inspire her, but at the time she never questioned it. Yet when the lights of Redlands shone at last through the gloom, she breathed a sigh of relief. Instantly Nick spoke. "Well done!", he said briefly. "You are your father's daughter still."
He alluded to some conversation they had previously exchanged in regard to the presence of a small detachment of troops at Redlands during the elections, which Courtland at the time, however, had diplomatically opposed. He suggested it now as a matter of public expediency and prevention.
Once, at Redlands, Nick excused himself and jumped out of the car at a shop. He was gone three or four minutes; but when he came back he said nothing of any purchase. It was only when he was bidding Mrs. May good night at her hotel door that, with a schoolboy air, he pulled a small package out of his pocket. "Talking of typical Californian things," he said, trying to seem careless, "here's one.
Then Sir Beaumains unlaced his helm, and would have straightway slain him, but the Knight of the Redlands yielded, and prayed for mercy. "I may not spare thee," answered he, "because of the shameful death which thou hast given to so many noble knights." "Yet hold thy hand, Sir knight," said he, "and hear the cause. And this I swore to her."
Jefferson their very naturalness made them more attractive, and perhaps it was for her sweet freshness and shy beauty that he gave the palm of loveliness to Miss Molly Crenshawe, who had ridden over on a pillion behind her brother from her father's neighboring estate of Edgemoor, attended by young Carter of Redlands, who was never far away from her if he could help it.
