Evie flitted between closets, wardrobes, and drawers, prattling while she worked off that first event of her season, in which the family were to be "killed off." She recited the names of those who would "simply have to be asked" and of those who could conveniently be omitted. "And, of course, Popsey Wayne must come," she observed in her practical little way.

There's lots more he's going to tell me then all about what Popsey Wayne had to do with it and everything. I'm glad he doesn't want to do it now, because my head is reeling as it is. I've so many things to think of and so much responsibility coming on me all at once and " "Are you going to do anything about Billy?" "Well, I can postpone that, at any rate.

But the kitten answered this question by peeping out from the child's shawl. They were all very much astonished to see it; but when Rosalie told its story, and the old woman heard that it was motherless, like Popsey, it received a warm welcome. The pitcher of milk was emptied for the hungry kitten, and when its breakfast was over, it sat purring in front of the bright fire.

Then he scratched the match on the seat of his pants and lit the cigarette with the air of a man who knows what is bliss. Keith watched him with feelings too confused for expression. "What would your mamma say if she saw you," he asked at last, instinctively dropping his voice to a whisper. "She'd tell popsey," Johan rejoined promptly, "and I'd get another licking. But it's worth it."

"Why do you call him popsey," inquired Keith, fascinated by the new word and wondering if he would dare use it to his own father. "Because that's what he is," Johan declared. A few minutes later they were playing together as if they had known each other for ever.

She was so used to the part of elder sister, with whom all confidences are discussed, that she found it difficult not to speak her heart out frankly. "I heard he had been to see you and Popsey Wayne, and told you," Evie said, with her pretty nose just peeping above the bedclothes, at midday, on a morning later in the week.

Then, when he had finished reading, the old man offered up a very suitable little prayer, in which Rosalie and Popsey were both named, and committed to the Shepherd's care. And then, when they rose from their knees, Rosalie felt it was high time she should go on her journey.

For she had not forgotten the little pitcher of milk, and the service it had been to her, and she thought that the cat on the milk-jug would remind Popsey of the little black kitten of which she had been so fond. All these parcels were put carefully under the seat in the pony-carriage, and then they drove to Mother Manikin's.

But the old woman would not hear of her going till she had wrapped up all that was left of the cake in a little parcel, and slipped it into the child's bag. After this, they all three the old man, the old woman, and Popsey went to the door to see Rosalie start. Popsey could hardly tear herself from the kitten, and the old woman could not make up her mind to stop kissing Rosalie.

One was, to buy a present for Popsey, the little girl with the pitcher of milk; and the other was, to call on Mother Manikin to see if Betsey Ann had arrived. The two children had each had a half-sovereign given them by Mr. Leslie; and Rosalie wished to spend hers in something very nice for little Popsey. But the difficulty was to choose what it should be.
