Criticism is a good thing, but poetry is a better. Indeed, criticism properly is not; it is but a process to an end. We could really do without it much better than we imagine: for, after all, the question is not so much how we live, but do we live? Who would not a hundred times rather be a fruitful Parsee than a barren philosophe?
This last meant Battalion Headquarters and two Companies in Philosophe, the remainder in Curly Crescent, a support trench several hundred yards behind O.B.1. Philosophe was a dirty place, but had the advantage of being much less shelled than the neighbouring Vermelles, and we were not much molested. Fouquières was always pleasant.
But what makes you suppose that I should be angry? Rubbish! Il faut que jeunesse se passe. Even if that officer were here now, I should refrain from putting him out of the room if I thought you really cared for him. Only, mind you, do not give him any of my money. You hear?" "You say, do you, that you would not be angry? Mais tu es un vrai philosophe, sais-tu? Oui, un vrai philosophe!
"And if you had, M. le Comte, I might, en philosophe, have been permitted to ask," replied French Clay, "what is love of our country, but a mere prejudice? and to a person of an emancipated mind, that word prejudice says volumes. Assuredly M. le Comte will allow, and must feel well, that no prejudice ever was or can be useful to mankind."
"Moi je suis philosophe," he said without any of the old insistence and pride and egotism, but as one would make an affirmation or repeat a creed. "Yes, yes, to be sure, always, as of old," answered M. Fille firmly; for, from that formula might come strength, when it was most needed, in a sense other and deeper far than it had been or was now.
She ended with a low, melodious laugh, bending her joyous eyes upon the apothecary with her head dropped to one side in a way to move a heart of flint. She turned and passed through a door, and by the same way Palmyre entered. The philosophe came forward noiselessly and with a subdued expression, different from any Frowenfeld had ever before seen.
Amongst the framed engravings, with which I had decorated my alcove at Montmorency, was a portrait of this prince, and under it a distich, the last line of which was as follows: Il pense en philosophe, et se conduit en roi. This verse, which from any other pen would have been a fine eulogium, from mine had an unequivocal meaning, and too clearly explained the verse by which it was preceded.
"Call it so," responded M. Grandissime. "Have you heard at whose house this was?" "No, sir." "It was at the house of Palmyre Philosophe." "Palmyre Philosophe!" exclaimed Aurora, in low astonishment. Clotilde let slip, in a tone of indignant incredulity, a soft "Ah!"
The great man was accordingly delighted; he replied with all that graceful affability of which he was a master, declared that his correspondent was 'un prince philosophe qui rendra les hommes heureux, and showed that he meant business by plunging at once into a discussion of the metaphysical doctrines of 'le sieur Wolf, whom Frederick had commended as 'le plus célèbre philosophe de nos jours. For the next four years the correspondence continued on the lines thus laid down.
She saw that though Aurora might be distressed about the rent, there was something else, a deeper feeling, impelling her upon a course the very thought of which drove the color from her lips and made her tremble. "You are wearing red," said the philosophe. Aurora's hand went nervously to the red ribbon about her neck. "It is an accident; I had nothing else convenient."
