Of her operas, "Susanna Monfort," "Magdalena," and "Eine Heimfahrt," have been frequently performed. Elise Schmezer has composed the opera "Otto der Schütz," besides a number of songs. Thekla Griebel has had her opera, "Schön Karen," produced twice within recent years. Elise Bachmann published a melodrama, "Die Macht der Musik," also some songs and piano pieces in popular vein.

Many of the letters in the present collection are concerned with the affairs of Schumann's paper, the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik, detailing his plans for removing it to a larger city than Leipsic, and the atrocious red-tape difficulties and delays he was subjected to when he finally did transfer it to Vienna.

I hope you will not have had too much unpleasantness for having missed the Hof Musik Direktor's dinner. I should be so sorry if you had any trouble because of me. Dear Herr Jean-Christophe, I am always Your very devoted servant and friend, P.S. On Sunday please do not call for me at home. It would be better, if you will, for us to meet at the Schloss Garten.

Schumann tells us that the year 1834 was the most important one of his life, for it witnessed the birth of the "N'eue Zeitschrift fur Musik," a journal which was to embody his notions of ideal music, and to be the organ of a clique of enthusiasts in lifting the art out of Philistinism and commonplace.

Translated Wedekind would lose his native wood-note wild, and doubtless much of his dynamic force for on the English stage he would be emasculated. And I wonder who would have the courage to produce his works. Musik, for example, if played in its entirety might create a profound impression.

There he was wi' a hunder laddies roond him, smokin' his pipe like's he was gettin' his denner ooten't, ane o' his airms up to the elba in his breeks' pooch, stappin' oot to the musik like a fechtin' cock, an' his ither airm sweengin' back an' forrit like the pendilum o' the toon's clock.

Gude-day wi' ye i' the noo than! Imphm! Gude-day. See an' gie's a cry in on Munanday, noo-na. Ta-ta! Sin' Friday nicht I've been gaen aboot wi' my hert an' moo fu' o' musik! Eh, hoo I did enjoy yon Gleeka Koir's singin'. I hinna heard onything like it for mony a day. D'ye ken, fine musik juist affeks me like a gude preechin' an' waur whiles. I canna help frae thinkin' aboot it.

Meanwhile the love that had been growing in silence between her and Schumann began to take tangible form. His unspoken passion found expression in the written rhapsodies addressed to "Chiarina" in his new music journal, the Neue Zeitschrift für Musik.

Later he gave up his room though not his intimate relations with the family and moved to a summer residence in Riedel's Garden, where he spent the days in music and the evenings with his friends. The year 1833, was one of the most remarkable in his life so far. Not the least important event was the establishment of the "Neue Zeitschrift für Musik." Schumann himself says of this:

Then she solemnly kissed him on the cheek. Soon afterwards they went to their rooms. In his bedroom Gaston made a discovery. He chanced to place his hand in the tail-pocket of the coat he had worn. He drew forth a letter. The ink was faded, and the lines were scrawled. It ran: It's no good. Mr. Ian's been! It's face the musik now. If you want me, say so. I'm for kicks or ha'pence no diffrense.
