She had been presented once with a fine edition of "Grimm's Fairy Tales," an edition with coloured pictures and every allure. She had turned its pages with a look of incredulous amazement. "What," she seemed to say she was then aged three and a half "are these absurd things that you are telling me? People aren't like that. Mother isn't in the least like that.

I had gone through three-quarters of the tales and notes contained in the present book before I became acquainted with the modestly named Anmerkungen zu Grimm's Mährchen, 2 vols., 1913-15, by J. Bolte and E. Polivka. This is one of those works of colossal erudition of which German savants alone seem to have the secret.

That this should be applied to all languages, notwithstanding the habit of most German typographers of printing all nouns with capitals, is borne out by no less an authority than the new Grimm's Deutsches Wörterbuch, which prints all words in "lower case" type except proper names.

Platen's poetry falls into two periods the early German tentative period and the later or foreign period, the poems of which were mostly written in Italy and in imitation of, or adapted from, foreign metres. Platen is always represented as a master of form, and, since Jacob Grimm's characterization of him, has been accused of "marble coldness."

These changes are indicated in a summary and comprehensive way by means of what is called 'Grimm's Law. Take Latin and English, for instance. 'Grimm's Law' tells us, among other things, that in Latin and in that part of English which is of Teutonic origin, a large number of words are essentially the same, and differ merely in certain phonetic changes.

I can answer for this; but it requires a good actor or actress. I shall really feel quite ashamed if I arrive in Munich without my sonatas. I cannot understand the delay; it was a stupid trick of Grimm's, and I have written to him to that effect. He will now see that he was in rather too great a hurry. Nothing ever provoked me so much. Just reflect on it.

I do not think that even the Prussians ever boasted about "Merry Prussia." VI Hamlet and the Danes In the one classic and perfect literary product that ever came out of Germany I do not mean "Faust," but Grimm's Fairy Tales there is a gorgeous story about a boy who went through a number of experiences without learning how to shudder.
