"Esther Asplin! I knew it was you! I knew no one else in the world could possess that back hair! How extraordinary to come across you here! It's a marvel that Mellicent was not with me, but we were both looking forward to seeing you at the vicarage at the end of the week!" "I am on my way home now.

She was not in the least what they had expected! This was neither the blonde beauty of Maxwell's foretelling, nor the black-haired elf described by Mellicent. The first glance was unmitigated disappointment. "She is not a bit pretty," was the mental comment of the two girls.

Peggy turned to Rob with a gesture of despair, and then started afresh on a different tack. "Is it an article in general use? Do you find one in every house?" "No, no!" "In our house?" Giggles from Mellicent, reproving glances from her father, a decided "No!" from Mrs Asplin. "In Rob's house?" "N-ot at present!" "Could you have more than one in any house at the same time?"

It seems so strange after having had so many of them all these years." "It seems very quiet and peaceful, if you ask me! and if I'm not a boy, I've been away, and I do think I deserve a little attention!" cried Mellicent, aggrieved. "If it had been Max who had come home, you wouldn't all be crying and moaning for the girls. You would forget there were such things in the world.

They went over the Tower, and enlivened the tedium of a Beefeater's life by discussing in his presence how best to steal the treasured Koh-i-nor; and finally, they visited the National Gallery, and on their return Mellicent and Eunice sat on Peggy's bed, while that young person represented some of the celebrated portraits for their benefit, with the aid of such properties as the room afforded.

She hugged the thought to her heart, finding in it her truest comfort. The laughter lasted several minutes, and broke out intermittently from time to time as that eloquent cough recurred to memory, but after all it was Mellicent who was the one to give the best suggestion. "Well then, a a what-do-you-call-it!" she cried. "A thing-um-me-bob! One of those three-legged things for taking photographs!

"No, father!" which replied to his strictures, would have melted a heart of stone, and Mellicent was relieved to see the colonel's frown gradually giving place to the usual good-natured twinkle. "But you must be more careful, child," he said, "or you and I will quarrel I can't stand disorderly ways. You ought to have a place for everything."

"I only wish he'd marry her and and give her a good time all her life," avowed Mellicent, lifting her chin. "Marry her!" exclaimed two scornful voices. "Well, why not? She's good enough for him," bridled Mellicent. "Aunt Maggie's good enough for anybody!" "Of course she is, child!" laughed Miss Flora. "Maggie's a saint if ever there was one."

He was not at all anxious to attract the attention of the sharp little tongue, so he passed on the signal to Mellicent, kicking her foot under the table, and frowning vigorously in the direction of the stranger. "Er," began Mellicent, anxious to respond to the signal, but lamentably short of ideas, "Er, Peggy! Are you fond of sums? I'm in decimals. Do you like fractions? I think they are hateful.

Rob scowled in the background and scraped his feet on the carpet, a sign of disapproval peculiarly trying to the nerves of his hostess; but then, as Mellicent sagely observed, Rob always was furious if Peggy talked to any one but himself; so that it was no use taking any notice of him, and so soon as tea was over, Mrs Asplin ordered him away with the two older men, feeling sure that the girls were longing for a chat by themselves.
