Considering the reputation that Lord Cromer had for masterfulness and for something approaching disregard of other people's feelings when he thought them foolish or in the wrong; for the irritability of extreme energy; or again for a fierce impatience with anyone who opposed his views, my experience surprised me not a little.

I fail to penetrate this mystery of the boy-cowherd's mind. Ethical nature may count upon having to reckon with a tenacious and powerful enemy as long as the world lasts.
But we may draw another lesson from this truculent apostle of his god. He is not the only instance of apparent religious zeal which is at bottom nothing but masterfulness.
