Now it was not right of Charles Thorpe to go to John Snap's house, nor ought he to have gone out with him to play at trap and ball, for he knew that it was wrong to do so. This was the cause why he could not go with Jane to the toy shop. He was kept at home for a week, and told not to go past the sunk fence.
Snap's eyes were as wild and piercing as those of a hawk; his nose and mouth were as the beak of a hawk; his hands resembled the claws of a hawk; and the spurs he wore, always bloody, were still more significant of his ruthless nature.
"They are pretty plump," was Snap's comment, and he uttered the words with satisfaction. "Not so bad for the first day's record," said Giant. "Fish and ducks." "Now if we could only get some squirrels, a few rabbits, a deer, and three or four bears " began Whopper. "Do you want to bring down everything within ten miles the first day?" demanded the doctor's son.
Up!" called Nan suddenly, and Snap rose on his hind legs, holding his fore paws out in front of him, so Nan could place the doll on them. This the little girl did, putting Flossie's "sawdust baby" carefully across Snap's paws. "Now take the doll for a walk!" ordered Nan, and, with another bark, off Snap started, parading across the deck.
"We'll not wait till to-morrow to go up on the plateau; we'll go at once." Then quick surprise awakened for Hare in the meaning in Mescal's eyes; he caught only a fleeting glimpse, a dark flash, and it left him with a glow of an emotion half pleasure, half pain. "Mescal," went on August, "go into the house, and keep out of Snap's way. Jack, watch me pack. You need to learn these things.
Now the gentleman was very fond of dogs, and had borne this greeting some dozen of times from Snap, who for his part knew the visitor quite as well as the washerwoman, and rather better than the butcher's boy. The gentleman had good, sensible, well-behaved dogs of his own, and was greatly disgusted with Snap's conduct.
"I guess Snoop will be glad to get out," said Flossie, putting her fat little finger in the basket to rub her pet. Snoop purred her thanks. The baggageman loosed Snap's chain, and let him jump out of the baggage car to Bert, who led him down the platform. There was another dog in the car, and his master came for him, following Bert. And then something happened.
They were now on another shelf, and from this location could look out over the entire surface of Lake Narsac. Not a boat or a person was to be seen. "This is certainly a lonely spot," was Snap's comment. "A hermit wouldn't wish for a more choice location." "And he could get plenty of fish and game," added Whopper. "And berries too, when they were in season."
Then down came half a dozen small branches, several with birds' nests on them. "This is positively the worst storm yet," was Snap's comment, after a perilous half hour had passed. "I am wet to the skin." "Don't say a word," groaned Whopper. "I've got about a barrel of water in my shoes and another barrel down my neck!"
"Oh, maybe he's found the straps, so we can harness up Snap," cried Flossie. But Bert's next words soon told the younger twins that it was no such good luck as that, for he cried: "Snap's running away, Freddie! He's running away. If you're going to harness him up you'll have to catch him!" "Oh dear!" cried Flossie. "Come on, help me catch him!" called Freddie. Together they ran into the yard.
