Jally taking a family group of father, mother and three sons, and had to wait until the sitting was over. While they waited they watched the crowds on the street. "Going to be plenty of folks here to see the circus," was Snap's comment, and his words proved true, folks flocking in from every quarter of the surrounding districts. When Mr. Jally was at liberty he read Dr.
The Skratdjs lost a silver teapot, a Stilton cheese, and two electro christening mugs on this occasion; and Mr. and Mrs. Skratdj dispute who it was who discouraged reliance on Snap's warning to the present day. One Christmas time, a certain hot-tempered gentleman came to visit the Skratdjs, a tall, sandy, energetic young man, who carried his own bag from the railway.
"He is certainly a bad one," was Whopper's comment. "Yes, and Andrew Felps is almost as bad," said Shep. "He would have bought those papers." They retraced their steps toward the lake, and soon met Andrew Felps and his companions. "Did you catch him?" asked the lumber dealer, nervously. "No," was Snap's short answer. "Do you know him?" went on Andrew Felps, curiously.
His suggestion was carried out. Snap's swim had made him cold, and he was glad enough to drink two cups of steaming hot coffee. The boys had brought some doughnuts along, and these, with the coffee and some fried fish, gave them a very appetizing breakfast. They took their time eating, waiting impatiently for the first signs of light in the eastern sky.
It was time for a big cold snap, and he gambled on it, cutting down the weight of grub for dogs and men. The men of Forty Mile shook their heads ominously, and demanded to know what he would do if the snow still fell. "That cold snap's sure got to come," he laughed, and mushed out on the trail.
At recess, which was nearly over when Bert got back to school, the children talked and laughed about Snap's visit. "I wish your dog would come to school every day," said Alice Boyd to Flossie. "Yes, wouldn't it be fun to have him do tricks," cried Johnnie Wilson. But Snap did not get loose again, and he soon got used to having the children away most of the day.
"See there," said August, pointing to tracks in the sand. The imprints of little moccasins reassured Hare, for he had feared the possibility suggested by the upturned boat. "Perhaps it'll be better if I never find her," continued Naab. "If I bring her back Snap's as likely to kill her as to marry her. But I must try to find her. Only what to do with her " "Give her to me," interrupted Jack.
They kept on steadily until six o'clock, and then came to a halt at a point where the watercourse narrowed and ran between a series of jagged rocks. "We ought to be getting to the lake pretty soon," was Snap's comment. "Jed Sanborn told me we could make the trip from Firefly Lake in a day if we didn't fool along the way." "Well, don't forget that we stopped for a nap," answered Whopper.
The inner room of the cabin was littered up with a variety of things, the wings of birds, feathers of chickens, shells of eggs, bones, bits of tree branches, an old iron chain, a tiny square looking-glass, badly cracked, some stale bread and cake, cores of apples and pears, and a great mass of other trash. "He's a regular pig," was Snap's comment.
"Here, you might as well keep this while you are at it!" cried Shep, and hurled a dead rabbit ashore. The game was unusually "ripe" and caught Andrew Felps directly across the face. The man staggered back, stumbled over a log and sat down directly in the midst of the scattered campfire! "Hi! Help! I am burning up!" "Gracious, boys, look at that!" burst from Snap's lips.
