Nedd in Welsh signifies a dingle, and the word in its various forms has always something to do with lowness or inferiority of position. Amongst its forms are Nether and Nieder. The term is well applied to the Glamorganshire river, which runs through dingles and under mountains. The Neath has its source in the mountains of Brecon, and enters the sea some little way below the town of Neath.
I declare by Him to whom all bow, * Of nothing 'neath her petticoat I trow: Nor meddle with her mouth; nor aught did I * But see and hear her, and it was enow!" Then he clad her in the shift and, giving her a lute, sent her back again to his nephew. When she came into al-Amin's presence, she kissed ground before him and tuning the lute, sang thereto these two couplets,
"Master O master!" he whimpered, "ghosts! 'neath the tree Tostig the Dead Hand!" "Nay, what folly is here, Roger?" "Lord, 'twas the Dead Hand touched me on the brow in the shadow yonder! Aye on the brow 'neath the tree! O master, dead men are we, 'tis Tostig come to drag us back to hell with him!" And crouching on his knees, Roger fell to desperate prayers.
I traced, however, my messenger through Newport, Cardiff, and Cowbridge. I was assured, also, that he had not passed me on his return; nor had any of those passed me whom he was seeking. At length, when I was within about two miles of Neath I met him. He had both the witnesses under his care. This was a matter of great joy to me. I determined to return with them.
Pale the drink we now are offering On the household altar here; But what living Nature maketh, Sparkling is and ever clear. Let us from the brimming goblet, Drain the troubled flood with mirth; Art is but a gift of heaven, Borrowed from the glow of earth. Even strength's dominions boundless 'Neath her rule obedient lie; From the old the new she fashions With creative energy.
We are assured that all is perfection in heaven there the skies are cloudless there all is serenity and peace. Here empires may be overthrown; dynasties may be extinguished in blood; millions of slaves may toil 'neath the fierce rays of the sun, and the cruel strokes of the lash; yet all is happiness in heaven.
"So, we were left galloping, Joris and I, Past Looz and past Tongres, no cloud in the sky; The broad sun above laughed a pitiless laugh, 'Neath our feet broke the brittle bright stubble like chaff; Till over by Dalhem a dome-spire sprang white, And 'Gallop, gasped Joris, 'for Aix is in sight!"
And, even as they came upon him, he sprang aside where the gloom lay blackest, and they being many and the clearing small, they hampered each other and fell into confusion; and, in that moment, Beltane leapt among them and smote, and smote again, now in the moonlight, now in shadow; leaping quick-footed from the thrust of sword and pike, crouching 'neath the heavy swing of axe and gisarm; and ever his terrible blade darted with deadly point or fell with deep-biting edge.
"Go, sir," I shouted, "but fame shall stalk fast behind you. Liar and craven will I dub you throughout the whole of France." He stopped 'neath the lintel, and faced me again. "Fool," he sneered. "You'll need dispatch to spread my fame so far. By this time to-morrow you'll be arrested. In three days you will be in the Bastille, and there shall you lie until you rot to carrion."
But you, whom nature and your knightly vow, Have given them as their natural protector, Yet who desert them and abet their foes, In forging shackles for your native land, You you it is, that deeply grieve and wound me. I must constrain my heart, or I shall hate you. RUDENZ. Is not my country's welfare all my wish? What seek I for her but to purchase peace 'Neath Austria's potent sceptre?
