Lysimachus was the father of Aristides. SUNT: = vivunt, as often; so in 32 esse = vivere; 54 fuit = vixit; 56, 60, 69. SEPULCRA LEGENS: Cato was a great antiquarian; cf. 38 Originum. IN MEMORIAM REDEO MORTUORUM: the genitive as with memini, recordari etc. For the phrase cf. Verr. 1, 120 redite in memoriam, iudices, quae libido istius fuerit; also below, 59 in gratiam redire cum voluptate.

Commentators are of opinion, that the Achilleis was left incomplete by the death of the author; but this is extremely improbable, from various circumstances, and appears to be founded only upon the word Hactenus, in the conclusion of the poem: Hactenus annorum, comites, elementa meorum Et memini, et meminisse juvat: scit caetera mater.

The following verses likewise were currently repeated on this occasion: Non Bibulo quidquam nuper, sed Caesare factum est; Nam Bibulo fieri consule nil memini. Nothing was done in Bibulus's year: No; Caesar only then was consul here.

If it had been valiant, he lodged it in the body of a lion; if voluptuous, in that of a hog; if timorous, in that of a hart or hare; if malicious, in that of a fox, and so of the rest, till having purified it by this chastisement, it again entered into the body of some other man: "Ipse ego nam memini, Trojani, tempore belli Panthoides Euphorbus eram."

See § 3; cf. also Laelius, § 4. On the whole subject of Aristotle's dialogues see Bernays' monograph, Die Dialoge des Aristoteles. § 32 quartum ago annum et octogesimum. Cf. Lael. 11 memini Catonem ante quam est mortuus mecum et cum Scipione disserere etc. Cicero always indicates this date; cf. § 14. Some other writers, as Livy, give, probably wrongly, an earlier date. Cf. Gell. Noct. Att. 13, 23.

The age of Solon at his death is variously given as 80 or 100 years. VIDEMUS: the Latins frequently use 'we see' for 'we read'. See n. on Lael. 39, also below, 69 ut scriptum video. GLORIANTEM: A. 292, e; G. 536, 527, Rem. 1; H. 535, I. 4. Notice the change to the infinitive in uti below. SENEX: i.e. cum senex essem; so 27 adulescens desiderabam; 30 memini puer.

On Feb. 24, Luther answered Spalatin: Die sermone bonorum operum nibil memini; sed et tot jam edidi, ut periculum sit, ne emtores tandem fatigam; but on Feb. 26, he wrote again: Memoria mihi rediit de operibus bonis sermone tractandis, in concione scilicet id promisi; dabo operam, ut fiat. See Dedicatory Letter, above, p. 107. We mention but one of many testimonies.

The Cadignans bear: or, five lozenges sable appointed, placed fess-wise, with the word "Memini" for motto, a crown with a cap of maintenance, no supporters or mantle. In these days the great crowd of strangers flocking to Paris, and the almost universal ignorance of the science of heraldry, are beginning to bring the title of prince into fashion.

COMMEMORO: 'I say over to myself'. In Cicero commemoro is a verb of speaking, and never has the meaning of recordor or memini. CURRICULA: see nn. on 33. MAGNO OPERE: better so written than in one word magnopere; so maximo, minimo, nimio opere. ADSUM AMICIS: 'I act as counsel to my friends'. This legal sense of adesse is common.

Now, on this occasion he was telling us how to express remembering in Latin: and he ordered us each to make a sentence bringing in the verb memini, "I remember."
