Gill, were in "B9" trench. A Company, under Capt. Bradford, in "H13" and "H14" trenches; C Company, under Lieut. Heslop, in the Hooge Château stables; and D Company, under Capt. Livesay, in support in "H16" trench. The trenches, especially those occupied by B Company, had been much battered, and a considerable amount of work had to be done on them during the night.
At the time of his retirement from business, the four daughters of Mr. Livesay were grown up to woman's estate; though perhaps that can hardly be said of the youngest, Irene, who was only sixteen, while her two sisters, Ada and Alice, were of the respective ages of eighteen and twenty.
Strict in requiring obedience to her commands, and in not permitting any of her rules to be disregarded, Miss Livesay was still a most loving and unselfish relative and friend, untiring in the kind attentions to the sick, ever glad and ready to relieve the needy, or to give a word of advice or sympathy when it was likely to be well received.
This was indeed not only counting the chickens before they were hatched, but not counting on misfortunes to those that were already hatched, and Mabel did not feel at all comfortable at the turn the conversation had taken; she was not sorry, therefore, when the servant came to say that Miss Livesay thought it time to go home.
On the 8th June it was amalgamated with the 8th Durham Light Infantry, the new Battalion being constituted as follows: Lieut.-Col. F.H. Livesay; Machine-gun section, 2nd Lieut. All supernumerary staff were sent to the base at Harfleur. At the same time the 7th Battalion became Divisional Pioneers and the 5th Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment joined the 151st Brigade.
Ellis to remonstrate, which she had all along wished to do. 'Really, Mary, you are too severe on the poor boy, she began, but was immediately, though kindly, silenced by Miss Livesay. 'Not now, if you please, dear, said Aunt Mary; 'we will not discuss this point before the juveniles, we will talk it over by-and-by.
Now it was too late for Mabel, though Clara and her aunt were actually at the time standing secure beneath the leafy screen; not certainly in a very comfortable state of mind, for Miss Livesay knew that her niece could not have reached home before the drenching shower descended, and she felt very uneasy on her account.
Mabel and Julia did not feel at all comfortable, though Aunt Mary would not let them leave the table to go in search of the truant. 'Don't distress yourselves, my dears, said Miss Livesay; 'depend upon it, the culprit is not very far off. Nurse and cook will look after him. And so the dinner proceeded, though Mabel would much rather have gone without, had she been permitted.
I am glad, very glad, you are going away; and I hope Miss Livesay will keep you a very long time, added nurse, while Fred, not daring to explode, on account of his aunt's being so near, vented his passion on the poor kitten by kicking it violently from under the stool, where he had again seated himself.
To Mabel's astonishment, nine o'clock struck, and she had not yet finished her pleasant occupation of examining, when her aunt said: 'Now, my dears, it is your bed-time. Clara instantly began to put away books and work, but Mabel exclaimed: 'Oh, aunt! must we go to bed so soon? I never go till ten, at home! 'Perhaps you never rise at six in the morning? replied Miss Livesay; 'we do.
