"Papa, what are you thinking of?" exclaimed Joanna indignantly. "I am very proud to help you, and I go out quite as often as the others. Do you not know, we keep a card hung up on Lilias's window-shutter, and we write down every month's invitations in stormy weather they are not many and we fulfil them in rotation.

Once again was noticed the subtle suggestiveness of Lilias's manner; but this time it was her pleasure to pose as a martyr a poor, fragile martyr, to whom had been deputed a hard and ungrateful task, while her companions played in the sunshine.

The porch-room was exactly opposite, and the three-sided windows did indeed allow an extraordinarily clear view of the interior. The girls had always believed themselves out of range of vision when they were seated at the table; but at this moment Nan could distinctly discern four anxious faces scanning the opposite house, catch Agatha's craning movements, and Lilias's waving hands.

She unloosed his cravat, and sent the warm stream over his throat and chest, rubbing them with her free hand, while she supported his head on the other arm; and inspired with fresh courage and trust she called anew this time a shrill, echoing call, and Harry Jardine shivered, sobbed, and stretched himself, and slowly opened his sealed eyes, looking her first vaguely and then wonderingly in the face, and her father's and Lilias's voices rose from opposite sides of the heath, near and far in reply.

But Lilias was too much occupied with her own thoughts to notice the unwonted honour; and, strange to say, the slight was not resented. Placing the glass in Lilias's hand, Mrs Stirling went into the house again. As Lilias raised it to her lips, her eyes fell again upon the approaching stranger toiling along the dusty road, and her hand was arrested.

The sun shone on Lilias's fair head, transforming it into an aureole of gold; pink and white were the colours of her morning dress, pink and white was her face, and the blossom on the hawthorn tree which shaded the window seemed made on purpose to form a background to the charming figure.

I kenned him when he was a guileless laddie, like yourself, Archie, man," said Nancy, not sparing her little prick to the sore heart. "And where's your sister to-day? Is your aunt so ill yet as to need to keep her from the kirk?" she added, with the air of finding a grievance in Lilias's absence. "Or is the lassie not well herself?

Lilias's thoughts roamed back over the past, and a dull resentment against her fiance grew in her mind; for did it not seem that he had always been unlucky, that the brief space of prosperity that had preceded her engagement had been the exception, not the rule, in his experiences?

And so he went on; and she was more silent and more a listener than usual. I don't know all that was passing in pretty Lilias's fancy in her heart near the hum of the waters and the spell of that musical voice. Love speaks in allegories and a language of signs; looks and tones tell his tale most truly. So Devereux's talk held her for a while in a sort of trance, melancholy and delightful.

As for Ned himself, fresh from the grim northern town, with the everlasting clang of machinery sounding in his ears, it seemed a very foretaste of paradise to find himself in the fragrant southern garden, seated beneath the shade of the trees, with Lilias's lovely face smiling upon him.
