Some gifts were exchanged, some guesses as to what home presents would be and they said good-night in the best of spirits.

"I got away with three hundred millions when Steel slumped from 105 to 50 and from 50 to 8, and no one knew I'd made a dollar. You and 'the Street' read every morning last year the 'guesses' as to who could be rounding up the hundreds of millions on the slump.

Yet since the Church is Divine, she knows, not merely guesses or hopes or desires, but knows, that although all things come to an end, God's commandment is exceeding broad. Years ago, she knows and therefore not all the criticism in the world can shake her that her Lord came down from heaven, was born, died, rose, and ascended, and that He reigns in unconquerable power.

It was Peggy who distinguished herself by suggesting, "Because Washington was her second mate," and Priscilla, whose flushed cheeks were rapidly regaining their natural hue, pronounced the answer correct. "Rather suspicious," Amy declared. "Priscilla guesses Peggy's, and Peggy, Priscilla's. Looks as if it was all fixed up beforehand. Well, Ruth, yours is the last."

I'm sure that Betsy Lavender guesses something about it; have you told her what my mother says?" "It was your secret, Gilbert." "I didn't think," he answered, softly. "But it's well she should know. She is the best friend we have. Betsy!" "A mortal long time afore I'm wanted!" exclaimed Miss Lavender, with assumed grimness, as she obeyed the call.

In the place of hundreds of thousands of more or less drunken and untrained young men marching into battle muddle-headed, sentimental, dangerous and futile hobbledehoys there will be thousands of sober men braced up to their highest possibilities, intensely doing their best; in the place of charging battalions, shattering impacts of squadrons and wide harvest-fields of death, there will be hundreds of little rifle battles fought up to the hilt, gallant dashes here, night surprises there, the sudden sinister faint gleam of nocturnal bayonets, brilliant guesses that will drop catastrophic shell and death over hills and forests suddenly into carelessly exposed masses of men.

Caleb Garth, having little expectation and less cupidity, was interested in the verification of his own guesses, and the calmness with which he half smilingly rubbed his chin and shot intelligent glances much as if he were valuing a tree, made a fine contrast with the alarm or scorn visible in other faces when the unknown mourner, whose name was understood to be Rigg, entered the wainscoted parlor and took his seat near the door to make part of the audience when the will should be read.

"I wouldn't have believed it, if anybody had told me," he said; "your mother seems to be afraid to let you touch her." Fritz had made many mistaken guesses in his time but, for once, he had guessed right. She was afraid. As the presiding genius of the household, Madame Fontaine was always first in the room when the table was laid for the early German dinner.

The elder Niebuhr, Grotefend, and Lassen had made some guesses at the meaning of the Cuneiform letters; but Major Rawlinson, of the East India Company's service, after years of labour, has at last accomplished the glorious achievement of fully revealing the alphabet and the grammar of this long unknown tongue.

Yet incredibly her cheeks did not tan nor lose their fineness. "You haven't told me who this handsomer man is," Kirby suggested. "Cole Sanborn." She flushed a little, but looked straight at him. "Have you told him about Esther?" "No. But from somethin' he said I think he guesses." Her eyes softened. "He's awf'ly good to Esther. I can see he likes her and she likes him.
