The Clary Grove boys soon realized that Denton's clerk was a good wrestler. Jack, afraid that he was going to lose the fight, stepped on Abe's foot with the sharp heel of his boot. The sudden pain made Abe angry. The next thing that Jack knew he was being shaken back and forth until his teeth rattled. Then he was lying flat on his back in the dust. Jack's friends let out a howl of rage.

To those who remembered the girl, with her weak eyes and wispy ginger coloured hair, it would have seemed comical, the idea that Joan resembled her. But Mrs. Denton's memory had lost itself in dreams; and to her the likeness had appeared quite wonderful. The gods had given her child back to her, grown strong and brave and clever. Life would have a new meaning for her.

Their work was to come quiet and swift and sure; but not yet. Only one face Laura saw, as she led the way to the moment's safety Tim Denton's; and it was as stricken as her own. She passed, then turned, and looked at him again. He understood; she wanted him. He waited till she sprang into her waggon, after the Healer had mounted his mule and ridden away with ever-quickening pace into the prairie.

The latter idea was Ruth Denton's. "Now that it is fall, Christmas isn't so very far off. Almost every girl has a little sister or a niece or a friend to whom she intends to give a doll," she said almost wistfully. "We could pledge ourselves to contribute one doll at least, and as many more as we please. Then we could draw on the treasury for a certain sum and invest it in dolls.

That night, after the second spell, Denton went with Blunt to certain waste and slime-soaked vaults under the Port of London, to learn the first beginnings of the high art of scrapping as it had been perfected in the great world of the underways: how to hit or kick a man so as to hurt him excruciatingly or make him violently sick, how to hit or kick "vital," how to use glass in one's garments as a club and to spread red ruin with various domestic implements, how to anticipate and demolish your adversary's intentions in other directions; all the pleasant devices, in fact, that had grown up among the disinherited of the great cities of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, were spread out by a gifted exponent for Denton's learning.

It was evident the next sentence was premeditated. "Whad I was going to say was this," said the swart man, and sought through a silence for further words. "Whad I was going to say was this," he repeated. Finally he abandoned that gambit. "You're aw right," he cried, laying a grimy hand on Denton's grimy sleeve. "You're aw right. You're a ge'man. Sorry very sorry. Wanted to tell you that."

"Sooner or later good deeds like that are sure to come to light." "I wish I knew," sighed Ruth, "but if I had known, then I couldn't have accepted them, you see." "Evidently the person who sent them was aware of that," reflected Anne. "Therefore, it is some one who knows all about Ruth Denton's pride." The flush on Ruth's face deepened. "I can't help it," she said.

The door itself is of the regulation six-panel arrangement. Few doorways in the Corinthian order are to be found in what may properly be termed the Colonial architecture of Philadelphia, for this order was little used by American builders until early in the nineteenth century. The doorway of Doctor Denton's house in Germantown instances its employment in a somewhat original manner.

But he had given her no opening, and the subject was not, apparently, to be renewed between them. She might have asked him, too, to curb Mrs. Denton's tongue. But no, it was not to be. Very well. The girl drew her small frame together and prepared, as no one thought for or befriended her, to think for and befriend herself. She passed the next few days in some depression. Mr. Helbeck was absent.

"There's pretty hot talk going. Somebody's been helping along by serving free drinks." "Now who could that be, I wonder?" "Maybe some of our tenement-owning politician friends who aren't keen about having to-morrow's 'Clarion' appear." "We ought to have a reporter down there, Mac." "Denton's there. Well, as there's nothing doing, I'll tackle a little work."
