The conditions of meeting the Judge, and being 'found of Him in peace, are that we should be 'without spot, and blameless'; and the conditions of being so spotless and uncensurable are, what they were in Amos's day, repentance and trust. Only we have Jesus as the brightness of the Father's glory to trust in, and His all-sufficient work to trust to, for pardon and purifying.
A sudden chill seemed to have fallen on most of the party. Some shrugged their shoulders, some smiled, others looked annoyed. Mrs Morse and her daughter exchanged looks of bewilderment behind Amos's back. Walter, with feelings of mingled shame and vexation, glanced at the bright face of his aunt, whose eyes swam with grateful tears.
When Amos's boat drew near the landing at Province Town, he saw that his father, Amanda, and the Stoddards were all waiting for him. He felt himself to be almost like the chiefs of whom Shining Fish had told him, and quite expected to be praised and made much of; but as he sprang ashore he felt his father's hand on his shoulder. "March yourself straight to the house, young man.
"Ah! and what else did John Pringle say?" I inquired, setting down my cup. "Why, 'e come into 'The Bull' all wet an' wild-like, an' wi' 'is two eyes a-stickin' out like gooseberries! 'E comes a-bustin' into the 'tap' an' never says a word till 'e's emptied Old Amos's tankard that bein' nighest. Then 'By Goles! says 'e, lookin' round on us all, 'by Goles!
The soldiers did not walk through the streets singly, as had been their custom; but in groups squads would be a more appropriate term, for they preserved some semblance of formation, even while lounging, as if prepared for an expected attack. It had not been Amos's purpose to venture out on this morning, and he had very good reasons for remaining at home.
I gather that her cruel and base husband has been removing, or intending to remove, her two children from Amos's charge, and that she is afraid they will be utterly ruined if they continue in their father's hands. Poor thing! poor thing! I pity her greatly." Her brother did not speak for a while, but two big tears fell on his daughter's letter, as he bent over it trying to conceal his emotion.
"Do you want to go?" and Amanda's voice was full of disappointment. "Want to! Why, the 'Sea Gull' is bound for the West Indies her next voyage, and maybe the English will try and catch us," and Amos's voice expressed his delight. "Are you sure, Amanda?" he questioned eagerly, and turned toward his sister in surprise, for Amanda was crying.
He was full of superstitions, and had settled on this day as the one particular day in the year when there would be a great flight of pigeons. "Pigeon Hill, off there to our right, is a pretty good place for pigeons. It's on our land, and I've got a pigeon rig up there. But Bull Meadow Hill is higher and a good deal better. It belongs to Amos's folks.
To his great surprise, and even dismay, he noticed, dangling from one of the post's outstretched wooden arms, a silk handkerchief of a rather marked pattern. Could it really be? Yes, he could not doubt it; it belonged to little George: it was a present to the child from himself only a few days before. Amos's blood ran cold at the sight.
This one is therefore intended to be taken as the continuation of these, and it is in substance a repetition of the third, only with more detail and emphasis. An insolent attempt, by the priest of Beth-el, to silence the Prophet, and the fiery answer which he got for his pains, come between. The stream of Amos's prophecy flows on, uninterrupted by the boulder which had tried to dam it up.
