These were Macnab and Wilkie: the one a decent middle-aged man with a fresh-washed face and a celluloid collar, the other a round-shouldered youth, with lank hair and the large eyes and luminous skin which are the marks of phthisis. 'This is Mr Brand boys, from South Africa, was Amos's presentation.
They did not feel much anxiety as to Amos's safety, for the boys of the settlement were used to depending on themselves, and many boys no older than Amos Cary or Jimmie Starkweather had made a voyage to the West Indies, or to some far southern port; but they were displeased that he should have started off without permission.
"Nay, aunt," he replied, "I don't think there was much moral courage about it in my case. My blood was up when I saw Amos's life threatened, and I should have pitched into the cowardly wretch if he had been as tall as a lighthouse and as big as an elephant."
Not one case resulted from it. It was some time before the little shop was re-opened, but many people, hearing of Mrs. Amos's bravery, came forward to help her tide over her difficulties. The landlord set a good example by sending her a receipt for rent which she had been unable to pay, and several Brentford ladies, having been told of her conduct by Mr.
"Wheat and chaff, I guess," was Uncle Amos's comment. "But, Amanda," asked Millie, "ain't there some person over the directors, boss over them?" "Just the County Superintendent, and he's not really boss over them. He comes round to the schools every year and the directors come with him and, of course, if he blames a teacher they hear it, and if he praises one they hear it."
I called him. He came to the step, his tongue hanging out, his stumpy tail wagging. "What'll you have, girls?" he seemed to say. "Get in here! Come up, Jack!" I coaxed, patting the seat invitingly. Jack put one paw on the step, and wagged his tail harder. Old Amos's shoulders shook. "Don' reckon you all will git dat dorg into de kerredge, Miss Faith," he said. "Look lake he smell a trick."
But yet, all the while, he rather fretted under Amos's rigid consistency, remarking to his sister that really it was a bit of a bondage to have to be always so very good, and that one must not be so over-particular if one was to get on with people who were not yet exactly angels.
Uncle Amos's story had interfered with the snitzing. "Say," said Millie, "how can abody snitz apples when you make 'em laugh till the tears run down over the face?" "Oh, come on," cried Amanda, "I just thought of it let's tell fortunes with the peelin's!
'You're reet; that's Moses' voice, or I'm a Jew. What's he doin' aat a neet like this, wi' Oliver's dog? I thought he'd bed enough o' that beast to last his lifetime. The two men were now leaning over a stone wall and looking down into the ravine below. Suddenly Malachi pricked up his ears, and said: 'An' that's Amos's voice an' all.
Again, men will lavish gifts far more freely in apparent religious service, which is but the worship of their reflected selves, than in true service of God. Again, the purity of willing offerings is marred when they are given in response to a loud call, or, when given, are proclaimed with acclamations. Let us not suppose that all the brunt of Amos's indignation fell only on these old devotees.
