Fact is," observed Frank, as though deciding to have the worst over, "they were the tracks of three persons, all men!" "Oh! my! three, you said, Frank; and that would mean Eugene, Spanish Joe, and Abajo, wouldn't it?" "Just the very ones I meant," replied Frank. "Then they must have been hiding some place near here, and saw the Moqui pass in?" suggested Bob, fully aroused by now.
"Get those coming up from under! Los de Abajo! Get the underdogs!" he screamed. Now his fellows were exchanging rifles, laughing and making wagers on their marksmanship. "My leather belt if I miss that head there, on the black horse!" "Lend me your rifle, Meco." "Twenty Mauser cartridges and a half yard of sausage if you let me spill that lad riding the bay mare. All right! Watch me.... There!
You may have heard of the village of Valverde? It is about fifty leagues south of Santa Fe, on the Rio del Norte that portion of the valley we call the Rio Abajo. It was at one time a settlement of some importance rich and prospering as any in New Mexico but, in consequence of the incursions of the Apaches, it fell into decay. Is now a complete ruin without a single inhabitant."
"Well, think again," said Frank; "and you'll remember that Abajo is his nephew!" "Why, of course he is," declared Bob; "and it looks as if our old enemies had cropped up again, to join forces with the new ones. That will make three against us; won't it, Frank?" "The more the merrier," replied the other, but Bob could see that he was inwardly worried over the new phase of the situation.
We see vineyards and grand haciendas. These appear richer and more prosperous as we approach the southern part of the province, the Rio Abajo. In the distance, both east and west, we descry dark mountains rolled up against the sky. These are the twin ranges of the Rocky Mountains. Long spurs trend towards the river, and in places appear to close up the valley.
Rich valley-soils and sea-slopes, as at Cuban Vuelta de Abajo and Syrian Latakia, are the proper habitats of the 'holy herb. Here it is planted in the high dry grounds about the 'Peak Fort' and the uplands east of the city. Manure also is rare and dear, and so is water, which, by the by, is sadly wasted in Madeira for want of reservoirs. Consequently the peasants smoke tobacco from the Azores.
In time, it became known that the choicest tobacco in the market came from the western end of Cuba, from the Province of Pinar del Rio. It was given a distinct name, Vuelta Abajo, a term variously translated but referring to the downward bend of the section of the island in which that grade is produced. Here is grown a tobacco that, thus far, has been impossible of production elsewhere.
On the mantelpiece I perceived a model of a small field-piece in brass and oak, and, what interested me more, a cigarbox. I raised the lid; the box was half full of highly creditable-looking cigars. My soul expanded with the thought of a probable offer of at least one. "None of your Flor de Connecticuts," I thought, "from the Vuelta Abajo of New-Windsor, but the genuine Simon Puros."
"It certainly does," Frank admitted, as he did likewise. Shortly afterward the two boys went down to supper. The hotel had its usual number of guests, this being a favorite point for parties to start on the tour. "Don't look just now," said Frank, as they sat at a table; "but Abajo has taken his seat right back of you.
"Where did you leave Abajo?" asked Frank, unable to restrain his curiosity. "Didn't leave him," replied the other, with a grin. "He gave me the merry ha! ha! and said as how he reckoned he'd had enough of the old Circle. Got his month's pay yesterday, you see, an' he's even. I reckoned somethin' was in the wind when I seen him talkin' with that feller."
