I saw a dark form moving against a background of blue sky. Instantly I thought it must be a lynx and was about to raise my rifle when a voice as from the very clouds utterly astounded me. I gasped in my astonishment. Was I dreaming? But violent threshings and whacks from the tree-top absolutely assured me that I was neither dreaming nor out of my head. "I get you whee!" shouted the voice.
So he began to laugh, and the sound reaching the ears of the others, appeared to act on their excited minds like soothing balm. Gradually the whole lot slackened their pace until they were going at a jog trot; which in turn settled down to a walk. Finally Bobolink came to a full stop. "Whee! let's get a few decent breaths, fellows!" he managed to gasp.
No elephant jumping up into the sky and balancing the moon on the end of his trunk was this, truly, but, Jerry thrilled at the first jump, imagining what it might have been. "Whee!" trumpeted the elephant as he turned back and jumped the fence again. He seemed to develop a very passion for wheeing and jumping the fence, returning to the charge again and again.
Out of sight now. Answer!" No wonder Bobolink fairly held his breath, and the other five scouts looked at each other, as though they could hardly believe their ears. For a full minute they sat there and stared; while Bobolink remembered the far-away black object that, at the time, he had thought to be a buzzard. "Whee!"
"Whee! listen to the way they're tearing along, would you?" exclaimed Bandy-legs, as the noise drew rapidly nearer. Every fellow seemed to take in a big breath. It was as though he meant to nerve himself for the exciting times to follow. "Remember, leave the biggest dog to me!"
"I hope they're preparing a surprise for us," chuckled Eph, as he looked about him at his armed crew. "I hope the schooner's people will try some mean trick for us, or attempt to put up a fight. Whee!" Yet none of these aggressive thoughts showed in the young Ensign's face. Eph knew his place, usually, and the amount of dignity that went with any place. "Make fast alongside!"
Fact is, it was such splendid fun that I just stood too long in one place, catching them and tossing the beauties ashore; and so when I tried to move, why, I couldn't to save my life. It felt like a giant had gripped both feet, and was holding me down. The more I tried the worse it got. Whee! I would have been pretty badly scared if no one was near by, I own up to that."
"My bird is dead, said Susy P., My bird is dead; O, deary me! He sang so sweet, te whee, te whee; He sings no more; O, deary me! Go hang his cage up in the tree, That cage I care no more to see. My bird is dead, cried Susy P." These provoking words Percy drawled out in a sing-song voice. It was too much. Susy's eyes flashed through her tears.
"Well, do y' know Aladdin? or Long John Silver? or or Jim Hawkins? or Uncas? or King Arthur?" The last name proved to be an error in selection. Instantly the half-dozen boys about Johnnie set up a derisive shout: "He knows a King! Aw, kids! He knows a King! Whee!" A faint smile, betokening pity, curved Johnnie's lips. Oh, but they were ignorant! and had no stylish friends!
And all of them raised "Whee ee!" Some of them were heard saying "He doesn't know much." Don't take a teacher for an encyclopaedia! If I could work out such hard questions as these easily, I would not be in such a backwoods town for forty yen a month. I returned to the teachers' room. "How was it this time?" asked Porcupine. I said "Umh."
