The slowly ascending steps were half way up the stairs. Nathaniel hesitated. He knew that a moment before there had passed through that door one who carried with her the odor of lilac and his heart leaped to its own conclusion who that person was. He had heard the rustle of the girl's skirt. He had seen the last inch of the door close as Strang's wife pulled it after her.
A single sweep of his powerful arms and he had forced himself through the innermost line of spectators. Within a dozen feet of him stood Strang's wife, her beautiful hair disheveled, her face deadly white, her bosom heaving as if she had been running. In a moment her eyes had taken in the situation the man at the stake, the upraised lash and Nathaniel.
Then slowly, with solemn tenderness, the obligation of that unspoken knowledge came into Evelyn Strang's face. She saw the youth standing there with grief older than the grief of the world stabbing his heart, drowning his eyes. She laid a quiet hand on his shoulder. "I understand." With all the mother, all the woman in her, she tried to say it clearly and calmly.
"I have implored Winnsome to do all that she can to get her away," replied Neil. "If Marion won't go " He clenched his hands with a moaning curse and sprang to his feet, again pacing back and forth through the gloomy dungeon. "If she won't go I swear that Strang's triumph will be short!" he cried suddenly.
'The marvel is that we were not all there, answered his father gravely. 'It was the cruiser "Carnelian" that saved us at the very last moment by putting a six-inch shell into the Turkish destroyer. 'But how on earth did she come to be there, right up the Straits? Ken asked amazedly. 'That was Strang's doing. The good chap sent a wireless asking them to look out for us.
The "somebody" was Strang's wife. There could be no other interpretation. He went to the trap and called down for Obadiah but there was no answer. The councilor had already gone. Quickly eating his breakfast the master of the Typhoon climbed down the ladder into the room below. The remains of the councilor's breakfast were on a table near the door, and the door was open.
From the footprints in that path it was quite evident that Strang's wife was a frequent visitor at Obadiah's. At the edge of the forest, from where he could see the log house situated across the opening, Nathaniel paused. He had made up his mind that the girl whom he had seen through the king's window was in some way associated with it.
James was interesting now it was because that face was a part of it, because the secret of its life, of the misery that it had confessed to him, was hidden somewhere down there among its scattered log homes. Slowly he made his way down the slope in the direction of Strang's castle, the tower of which, surmounted by its great beacon, glistened in the morning sun. He would find Strang there.
Here, with Strang's books on occult science, with other books of her own choosing, the wife lived secretly, unknown of any other human being, the long vigil of waiting for some sign or word from the spirit of one who by every token of religion and faith she could not believe dead only to her wistful earthly gaze, hidden. She also hid in her heart one strangely persistent hope namely, Gargoyle!
There she goes. She's sinking. Poor beggars, they haven't time to get out a boat, and we'll never reach 'em in time to save any of them. 'Her stern's under. Bow's straight up in the air! He paused a moment. 'All over, he added quietly. 'She's gone. Commander Strang's voice rang out from farther aft.
