Probably this poor wild man of the woods would succeed by means of a very simple process, and thus prove to his more civilised brother that, notwithstanding books and schools, there is a vast deal of knowledge to be picked up at every step, whichever way we turn ourselves. In the morning, as usual, we found the bait gone from the shark-hook.
"Father!" the frightened voice ventured forth a tiny bit louder. But the unheeding Senior Surgeon had already reached the piazza. "Fat Father!" screamed the little voice. Barbed now like a shark-hook the phrase ripped through the Senior Surgeon's dormant sensibilities. As one fairly yanked out of his thoughts he whirled around in his tracks. "What do you want?" he thundered.
This was what may be called a neat speculation, certainly a SAFE one, as the return duty alone would have covered the cost and expenses! In the river, opposite the city, the current was rapid, especially during the ebb tide, and sharks were numerous. We caught three or four heavy and voracious ones with a shark-hook while lying at anchor.
"Is that the way you take care of our provisions?" said the captain, sternly, to Baldwin. "We've got a big hook, sir," said Edwin Jack, touching his cap; "shall we try to recover the pork?" "You may try," returned the captain. Little Wilkins uttered something like a war-whoop as he leaped up and assisted Jack to get out the shark-hook. It was soon baited with another piece of pork.
We won't have much trouble in catchin' as many o' 'em as we want." "A doan b'lieve, Massa Brace, we hab got nebba such a ting as a shark-hook 'board de Cat'maran." "Don't make yourself uneasy 'bout that," rejoined the sailor, in a confident tone. "Shark-hook be blowed! I see somethin' up yonder worth a score o' shark-hooks. The brutes be as tame as turtles turned on their backs.
Sliding his body gently inboard again, Leicester turned to the dozing helmsman, and exclaimed "Here, you Ned; rouse up, man. There's a big shark under the counter, so get out the shark-hook, ask the cook for a piece of good fat pork, and muster the watch aft in readiness to haul him inboard, in case we can coax him into swallowing the bait."
Now, seeing that our fellow-voyagers, the little fish along-side, were sorely tormented and thinned out by the incursions of a pertinacious Chevalier, bent upon making a hearty breakfast out of them, I determined to interfere in their behalf, and capture the enemy. With shark-hook and line I succeeded, and brought my brave gentleman to the deck.
It is a cruel, strong and dangerous beast, but not so courageous as the Bengal tiger. We now baited a shark-hook with a large fish, and put it upon a board about a yard long and one foot broad which we had brought on purpose. This board was carried out in the canoe, about forty yards into the river.
By means of a string long enough to reach the bottom of the river, and at the end of which string was fastened a stone, the board was kept, as it were, at anchor. One end of the new rope I had bought in town was reeved through the chain of the shark-hook and the other end fastened to a tree on the sandbank. It was now an hour after sunset.
The shark-hook was baited with a piece of bull's hide, and the animal, who was still working up and down alongside the ship, hoping that he would still pick up a marine I presume, took the bait greedily, and was hauled on board. The axe was immediately at work at his tail, which was dismembered, and a score of knives plunged into his body, ripping him up in all directions.
