"The other events of that day, including the dropping of the scarab, I need not describe, as they are known to you. But I may fitly make a few remarks on the unfortunate tactical error into which I fell in respect of the bones. That error arose, as you have doubtless perceived, from the lawyer's incurable habit of underestimating the scientific expert.

"Now," he said, fingering the scarab, "if I was not dreaming, and if by some mysterious means Her Highness's promise is to be actually fulfilled, I ought to be able to take this ring off without opening my hand. Certainly, any fourth dimensional being could do it." As he spoke he pulled at the setting of the scarab and, to his amazement, the ring came off whole.

He spent no time picturing the method of his triumph over it. Beyond that obstacle were tender pictures of home-making, love and life, which so filled him with emotion that, in a sudden ebullition of boyish gratitude, he pressed the all-potent signet to his lips. Then, his cheeks reddening with a little shame at his impulsiveness, he examined the scarab.

Frank bowed his head gravely at once, and the Sheikh smiled his satisfaction, before springing up quickly, and forgetting his grave manner he clapped his hands together, applauding, and then bowing low to the grave and reverend Hakim who entered the tent slowly in flowing white garments and voluminous turban, in front of which was fastened a large, dark green scarab, a genuine treasure found by the professor in the tomb of a man who was supposed to have been physician to one of the Egyptian kings.

This I said before the face of Matthew Berry, with a complete loss of memory of all of the wonderful things he had been giving me from my début bouquet of white orchids and violets to the tiny scarab from the robe of an Egyptian princess that I wore in the clasp of my platinum wrist-watch. "Well, I should say!" Matthew exclaimed, with not a thought of the comparison in his generous mind.

And now indeed she was weeping but, blinded by her tears, choked by her sobs, she yet reached out her arms to me in mute appeal; and it seemed that somehow her tears were blinding me also, her passionate sobs shaking me, for I stood in a mist, groping for the support of my chair-back; indistinctly I heard a voice speak that I knew was mine. "So you still wear the scarab ring I've seen it before.

"We know that you gave the signals to Julia, and we know that you locked me in the classroom the day of the big game." Miriam flushed with shame and her lip quivered. Seeing her distress, Grace went on quickly: "The janitress found your scarab pin just outside the door on the day of the game. Anne has it here for you." Anne fumbled in her purse and drew out the pin.

"But yet you are sure about the scarab?" "Yes, quite sure." "You noticed that, then?" "No, I didn't. How could I when it wasn't there?" Mr. Loram paused and looked helplessly at the witness; a suppressed titter arose from the body of the Court, and a faint voice from the bench inquired: "Are you quite incapable of giving a straightforward answer?"

"The boat is mine, children," was his quiet answer. He pushed it off, stepped into it, and turned it broadside to them. "See here, the scarab of Ptah," he said, tapping the bow with a paddle, "and the name of Memphis?" With that he drew away to the sandbar before the astonished men had realized the turn of events.

He had been unable to prevent the theft of the scarab, but he might still detect the thief. For the Doctor Watsons of this world, as opposed to the Sherlock Holmeses, success in the province of detective work must always be, to a very large extent, the result of luck.
