A limited vocabulary means that each word shall be overworked. Thus, fella, in beche de mer, means all that piecee does and quite a bit more, and is used continually in every possible connection. Another overworked word is belong. Nothing stands alone. Everything is related. The thing desired is indicated by its relationship with other things.
"Been havin' a pipe, Sin?" he asked, winking at his companion. "I can smell something like opium!" "No smokee opium," murmured Sin Sin Wa complacently. "Smokee Woodbine." "Ho, ho!" laughed the other constable. "I don't think." "You likee tly one piecee pipee one time?" inquired the Chinaman. "Gotchee fliend makee smokee." The man who had poked the fire slapped his companion on the back.
"H'm!" muttered Drake under his breath to Frobisher; "I don't much like the look of this. "She's gone," repeated Captain Kneebone. "No boat for us." But the compradore, dragging his bundle of sharp halberds, poked an inquisitive head out past the captain's, and peered on all sides through the smoke, with comical thoroughness. He dodged back, grinning and ducking amiably. "Moh bettah look-see," he chuckled; "dat coolie come-back, he too muchee waitee, b'long one piecee foolo-man."
"Comee here," he muttered, "my placee, all full up and no other placee b'long open." Bill Bean slapped him boisterously on the back. "Cut the palaver, Pidgin, and gimme a pipe. Piecee pipe, Pidgin!" He lurched across the floor, nearly falling over Stuart's legs, took up a mat and a cushion, lurched into the further corner and cast himself down.

"Two pipe quick," he said. "Plenty room. Two piecee pipe or plenty heap trouble." A dreary voice from one of the bunks came: "Give 'im a pipe, Charlie, curse yer! an' stop 'is palaver." Yan performed a curious little shrug, rather of the back than of the shoulders, and shuffled to the box which bore the smoky lamp.
But all was silent, and he could see some of the shadowy forms of the men on guard. It was then half-past eleven, as he found by looking at his watch, and too late to go to sleep again, even if he felt inclined. Precisely half an hour later a figure appeared at the door of the tent, and a voice observed quietly: "Time to wake up, mastel. You tellee me wake you one piecee time twelluf.
