The boy was walking restlessly up and down the room. The look he turned upon Aynesworth was almost pitiful. "He'll see you again," Aynesworth said hurriedly. "Come along." The boy wrung his hand. "You're a brick!" he declared. Wingrave glanced up as they entered. He motioned Nesbitt to a chair by his side, but the young man remained standing.
The mate was hit in the head, and taken down below; and poor old Nesbitt, who was at the wheel, steering the craft beautifully, had a bullet right into his bow-window, as they call it. "Well," the old fellow says, "here's a shot between wind and water, I reckon we must have a plug;" so he puts his flippers into his waistband, and stuffs his flannel jacket into the hole.
So, Ned did not appear at all pleased when the lieutenant stepped forward to take his place in the cutter, giving him an envious look when he took his seat in the sternsheets prior to her being lowered down. I, too, cast an appealing glance at Mr Jellaby; and this, fortunately for me, Commander Nesbitt intercepted. "I suppose you would like to go, youngster, eh?" he said to me.
Where are you going?" cried Dunn. "To the devil," cried the lad, slamming the door behind him. "And, by Jove, he'll go, too!" said Nesbitt. "Say, I'm awfully sorry I made that break, Dunn. It was beastly low-down to round on a chap like that. I'll go after him." "Do, old chap! He's frightfully cut up. And get him for to-night. He may fight shy of the dinner.
Some brandished fists at the unresponsive brick walls or called threats against Cora. As Broderick and Nesbitt passed the door, a handsome and richly clad woman emerged. Trickling tears had devastated the cosmetic smoothness of her cheeks. Her eyes looked frantic. But she proceeded calmly, almost haughtily to a waiting carriage.
Mr Jellaby, however, did not stop to notice these details, but made his way as well as he could through the maze of tangled cordage and heaps of wreckage that lay about in every direction towards the portion of the main rigging yet remaining intact, where, lashed to a fragment of the bulwarks that had not been washed away, was the figure of the man Commander Nesbitt had noticed.
He scarcely recognized him for a moment. The fresh color had gone from his cheeks, his eyes were set in a fixed, wild stare; he seemed suddenly aged. Aynesworth stopped him. "Hullo, Nesbitt!" he exclaimed. "What's wrong?" The young man would have passed on with a muttered greeting, but Aynesworth turned round with him, and led the way into one of the smaller smoking rooms.
They would have done no good in the first moments of her sorrow, as Mrs Nesbitt very well knew. "Effie, my bairn," said she, gravely, "you have trouble enough to bear without needlessly adding to it by blaming yourself when you ought not. Even if you had known all, you could not have gone to your sister, except in the sorest need. Has there been a single day when you could have been easily spared?
We waited nearly a week for the powder, and many a laugh we all had about it, thinking old Nesbitt was not much of a fighter, from his making so much fuss.
