The little maid is sleeping. And those rude people laughed at Jesus, just as if He did not know what He was talking about. So Jesus turned them all out. Then Jesus took three of His disciples Peter, and James and John and Jairus and his wife; and they went together to look at the child. There she was, lying quite still. Life had flown away from her body.
The speaker evidently was thinking more of being polite to Jesus than of the poor father's stricken heart, Jairus would feel then what most of us have felt in like circumstances, that he had been more hopeful than he knew.
Jesus would have us know that faith is a dependence upon his gracious person and purpose, and also that only after public confession of our relation to him can we receive the assurance that we are saved and can hear his blessed word, “Thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.” The faith of Jairus was likewise imperfect.
Jairus fell down at Jesus' feet and began to plead with him to come to his house at once: "My little girl is dying. Please come and put your hands on her, and heal her, and make her live!" Jesus went with Jairus, and the whole crowd followed to see what he was going to do. As they walked along the street, with people pressing in on them from every side, Jesus suddenly stopped and said,
As their boat drew near to land, they saw a crowd standing on the shore. Everyone had been watching anxiously, waiting for Jesus to come. When Jesus stepped ashore, the waiting crowd made way for a man who was well known in the town. His name was Jairus, and he was the chief officer of the synagogue.
Jesus turned to the disciples and said, "You saw a woman healed through faith." They looked at him, wondering what he meant. To Jairus, Jesus said, "Come, take me to your home." All hope was gone for Jairus, but obediently he led the way. Already the hired wailers filled Jairus' house.
It was evident, they said, that Farnham had a considerable police force with him to protect his property; it was useless to waste any more time there; let the rest stay there and occupy the police; they could have more fun and more profit in some of the good houses in the neighborhood. "Yes," one suggested, "Jairus Belding's widder lives just a step off. Lots o' silver and things. Less go there."
Jairus had every reason for abandoning hope, and his only reason for clinging to it was faith. So it is with us all. It is vain to bid us not be afraid when real dangers and miseries stare us in the face; but it is not vain to bid us 'believe, and if we do that, faith, cast into the one scale, will outweigh a hundred good reasons for dread and despair cast into the other.
Let Him take your hand and rub away the numbness; your head, and bathe off the aching; your heart, and stop its wild throb. He brought Lazarus to life; He brought Jairus' daughter to life; He brought the young man of Nain to life, and these are three proofs anyhow that he can bring you to life.
The mother said in all humility: "Whatsoever Thou doest, Master, that is surely right." He went to the table where the child was comfortably eating her food, laid His hand on her head, and said: "You have come to earth from heaven, now give up earth for heaven; what is earned is greater that what is given." So the wife of Rabbi Jairus heard as Jesus went out of the door.
