As the five struggled about, Hal caught a glimpse of the newcomer's face, and he gave a cry of wonder, uttering a name that caused Chester to release his hold upon the Italian officer and step back in surprise and pleasure. "Major Derevaux!" exclaimed Hal. The French officer also stepped back in surprise, for until that moment he had not had time to glance at the two lads.
Immediately Hal kicked shut the door behind them and sprang forward to lend a hand to Chester and Major Derevaux, who had pounced upon the strangers as they entered. "Don't let them cry out and don't kill them if you can help it," the lad cried. The struggle raged furiously in the darkened room for some moments.
But, if we go singly, or by twos, from different directions, we stand a chance of gaining the city without being challenged." "A good idea," exclaimed Captain Derevaux; "I heartily approve of it." "And I, too," declared the young lieutenant; "and I recommend that we put the plan into execution at once." The lone dissenting voice came from the wounded chauffeur.
"I don't believe we could do much good in the day time." "My idea exactly," agreed Chester. "We may have to make a few preparations." "I would like to go with you boys," said Major Derevaux, "but I fear it will be impossible. I must return immediately I have had my interview with General Ferrari."
Turning, Hal perceived that the person who had accosted him was none other than Lieutenant Anderson, and with him was Captain Derevaux. All four expressed their pleasure at this unexpected meeting, and the boys explained their misfortune. "How is it you and Captain Derevaux didn't get away?" Chester finally asked. Captain Derevaux smiled.
"I shall remain at my quarters in the hopes that I may be given a hand in the game." The lads shook hands with the general and walked to the door. "Wait a moment, boys," said Major Derevaux. "I want a few words with the general, and then I shall be at liberty to go with you."
The sooner we start the better, is the way I look at it." Chester and the lieutenant said good-by to the chauffeur, and then Chester turned to Hal and held out his hand. "In case " he said, as they gripped, and a moment later he and the young lieutenant were gone. Hal, Captain Derevaux and the chauffeur reentered the woods, where they sat down to wait the half hour agreed upon.
His three companions arose and peered over his shoulder. The cavalrymen were plainly discernible in the glare of an electric street light. "It's impossible," replied the lieutenant. "We shall have to stop. They would shoot us to pieces before we could get through. Here," turning to Chester and Captain Derevaux, "cover up the chauffeur with these rugs and lay him in the bottom of the car.
"You certainly have made a great impression upon the general," said Captain Derevaux, when the boys informed him of their mission. "Just keep as cool as you have been in the past, and I am sure you will get through without trouble."
"By the great Horn Spoon!" ejaculated Chester, after one look at his prisoner. "I'll take my oath that this man is Stubbs." At the same moment a cry of astonishment was wrung from Major Derevaux. "Anderson!" he cried. Chester and Hal got to their feet. The former twisted his hand in the collar of his prisoner and lifted him to his feet.
