"But they stole my paper!" cried Colonel Fuesco. "That is not true," said Major Derevaux. "I can vouch for their loyalty." "But who can vouch for you?" demanded the colonel. "How is General Ferrari to know that you, too, are not a spy, coming to him with false credentials?" "I can answer that question," replied the general. "As it happens, I have known Major Derevaux for years.
Colonel Anderson led the way from the house, and the others followed him through the darkness. It was three days later and Hal and Chester sat in their own quarters in the shelter of the American lines. The flight from the German lines had been made safely. The aeroplanes had been found where Colonel Anderson and Major Derevaux had left them.
Cavalry, artillery and infantry in solid masses on every side; officers darting hither and thither delivering sharp orders. It was an impressive sight. An officer on horseback dashed up to General French and the two held a short conversation. As the rider turned and was about to make off again the lads recognized him. "Major Derevaux!" shouted Hal, taking a step forward.
In vain the Belgians charged upon the advancing line and poured in shot and shell. The Germans came on. To the right the Germans also were pushing slowly, but surely, forward. "It is terrible! terrible!" said Chester, with a shudder, as he watched men fall right and left. "Horrible!" agreed Hal. "But come. We must move. It is as Captain Derevaux said. The Belgians will be unable to hold the town.
The others nodded and Hal gently slid open the secret door. "Remember," he whispered back, "fifteen minutes." The door closed behind him. Hal made his way quietly through the two rooms that led to the stairs, and as quietly descended. As he passed through the parlor and approached the room in which he had met Major Derevaux the night before he heard the sound of voices. He paused and listened.
Over the table, Hal asked Major Derevaux what he was doing in Rome. "I don't know as it is my secret now," replied the major. "I am here with a despatch from General Joffre.
